Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin made history in Game 6 against the Montreal Canadiens to keep his team's season alive. In Game 7, he scored the game-tying goal in the third period to force overtime. However, it wasn't enough. The Canadiens defeated the Sabers in Game 7 to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Dahlin put everything on the line to give his team a chance. And yet, they were one shot short of moving on. The Buffalo captain's reaction to this loss is quite understandable given the context. "It f*****g sucks," he said on Monday night, via Bleacher Report contributor Joe Yerdon.
The Sabres and Canadiens battled in overtime for over 10 minutes. It ended when forward Alex Newhook rifled a shot past goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and into the net. Newhook's sixth goal of the series sent Montreal on to the East Final. Meanwhile, the Sabres are heading home empty-handed.
Despite the disappointment, it was a fantastic season for Buffalo. Dahlin, in particular, played at an elite level. He is a finalist for the Norris Trophy as the best defenseman in the NHL. The Sabres, meanwhile, won the Atlantic Division, ending a 14-year playoff drought in the process.
The Sabres took on the Boston Bruins in the first round. It was a closely fought series, but Buffalo pulled through in the end. They won in six games, marking the first time the team had won a playoff series since 2007.

This is certainly not the way Dahlin or his teammates wanted things to end. Still, there are a lot of positives to take away from this season. And it definitely appears as if the Sabres are only getting started as a playoff contender.
