The Boston Red Sox took Game 1 of the three-game series against the New York Yankees with a 6-3 win on Thursday. With the club heading into its second matchup of the series, Boston received crucial injury updates on eight different players on the roster.
MLB.com shared injury updates for Trevor Story , Romy Gonzalez , Isiah Kiner-Falefa , Jovani Moran , Triston Casas , Tanner Houck , Roman Anthony , and Patrick Sanodval. Most of the updates indicated that players will return sometime in July or after the All-Star break.
After the Red Sox transferred Story to the 60-day IL with his sports hernia, he is not expected to return until after the All-Star break. "Has been running and swinging and will take grounders soon," said the report. "General timetable for recovery is eight to 12 weeks, and Story thinks he is closer to eight."
Romy Gonzalez was placed on the 60-day IL back on March 12 while recovering from left shoulder surgery and is expected to return during this current series against the Yankees. "After a scheduled night off in his rehab assignment, Gonzalez will play at least one more game with Triple-A Worcester on June 26," claimed the update. "His next game after that could be for Boston."
Kiner-Falefa is dealing with left forearm inflammation, and the club needs more information before determining when he can expect to return from the 10-day IL. "Will undergo CT scan on June 26, which should determine the severity of his injury," the report stated.
Jovani Moran is making progress with his left elbow inflammation and will return at some point in July. "Started rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on June 25."
Casas, who was transferred to the 60-day IL on April 22 with a left abdominal strain, could return shortly after the All-Star break. However, that does not appear to be a guarantee. "Making gradual progress in hitting program, swinging off a tee, and against a machine."
Houck is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery and is hoping to get back on the mound late this season. The right-hander just started light mound work for the Red Sox.
Roman Anthony's partially torn tendon in his right ring finger is taking longer to heal than the club initially expected. However, he appears to be making progress and could return to the lineup at some point in July. "Anthony's imaging from his injury's six-week anniversary showed healing. Taking light swings with a skinny bat every couple days and 'improving,' according to manager Chad Tracy."
Lastly, left-handed pitcher Patrick Sandoval aims to return from left biceps discomfort in July. He is making progress in his rehab assignment for now. "Stretched out to 3 1/3 innings and 53 pitches in his Minor League rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on June 23, giving up four hits, two runs (one earned) while walking one and striking out one. Next start for WooSox scheduled for June 28."
