The Boston Red Sox have continued to struggle this year. The Sox have sustained multiple injuries to their pitching staff , including to Ranger Surarez, Garrett Crochet , Kutter Crawford , and Sonny Gray .
The injuries to many major parts of the rotation have opened the door for the Red Sox ’s top prospect to make some starts at the major league level. Now that the top prospect got his first win, he was celebrated properly , according to Ian Browne of MLB.com.
Payton Tolle , the number one prospect in the Red Sox system, pitched seven innings against the Detroit Tigers , giving up two runs, both unearned, to take the victory. After the game, interim manager Chad Tracy gave him the lineup card, and his teammates showered him with beer and some other substance.
“Not sure what was in that concoction,” Tolle said.
It was the sixth start of Tolle’s career. He made three starts in 2025, going 0-1 with a 6.06 ERA. This year, he has made three starts, including Tolle pitching a gem against the New York Yankees . Despite giving up just one run, he took the no-decision as the Yankees beat the Red Sox 4-2. In his next start, he would give up three runs over 4 and 2/3 innings of work, taking the loss as the Red Sox fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0. Now, Tolle has a win. After the game, he apparently gave an epic postgame speech.
“Yeah, too bad you guys didn’t get to hear his speech,” Duran said. “It was 1/1. That guy’s always got something to say, and I love it. I can’t wait to see more come his way.”
Tolle has left the game with the lead twice already in his career, including once in 2025, but this time, the bullpen held the lead.
“It took long enough [to get the win]. I’m excited about it,” Tolle said. “I was really looking forward to this. I’m kind of proud of it right now. It was a good day.”
Despite the win, the Red Sox are 14-21 on the season , which is last in the AL East. The Sox face the Tigers in the second game of their three-game set on Tuesday.
