The Boston Red Sox acquired first baseman Willson Contreras in an offseason trade to add an extra spark to their lineup. So far, he has lived up to his billing.
Contreras reached base 30 times in his first 15 games with the Red Sox. He joined David Ortiz , Manny Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis as the only players in Boston history to hit that threshold , via Tim Healey of the Boston Globe.
Through those 15 games, Contreras is hitting .302 with three home runs and 11 RBIs. Amongst Red Sox with at least 10 games played, the first baseman ranks tied for first in home runs and RBI and third in batting average.
Boston has had a slow start to their season at 6-9. They'll need players like Contreras to continue contributing in the middle of the lineup. The Red Sox were well aware of what they were acquiring in the first baseman when they made the trade.
He was a three-time All-Star and World Series champion during his seven-year run with the Chicago Cubs . Over his past three years with the St. Louis Cardinals , Contreras hit .261 with 55 home runs, 183 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.
It would take a herculean effort from the first baseman to be held in the same esteem as Ortiz and Ramirez, especially in Boston. But the Red Sox certainly aren't complaining about his first 15 games with the franchise. How he fares over his next 147 will determine how strong of an acquisition Contreras was.
As they try to make a march for the playoffs though, Boston cannot afford his bat to cool down.
