The play unfolded during a pivotal inning with the bases loaded and no outs. Dansby Swanson hit a ground ball to third, where Ke'Bryan Hayes stepped on the bag for the force play and removed the possibility of an out at home.
Stephenson then received the throw at the plate, but he did not apply a tag as Ian Happ slid home. Instead, he stepped off the plate, allowing Happ to score easily and giving Chicago another opening during a damaging rally.
The mistake proved costly almost immediately. The Cubs capitalized on the confusion and turned the inning into a seven-run outburst, transforming a tight divisional matchup into a lopsided game. The inning completely shifted momentum toward Chicago, which continued applying pressure against a Cincinnati team struggling to recover from mistakes defensively.
Jomboy Media shared the sequence on X, formerly Twitter, capturing the confusion and amplifying the moment across the baseball world.

"Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson did not realize it was a tag-play and just let the run score."
The clip spread quickly because of how fundamental the mistake appeared. For a Reds team already trying to snap a difficult losing streak, the lapse reinforced concerns about execution and awareness in high-pressure moments.
Thursday's loss extended the Reds' losing streak while the Cubs continue building momentum in the National League Central. The sequence involving Stephenson became one of the clearest turning points, shifting control firmly toward the Cubs.
Now, the Reds must regroup quickly and clean up the details that continue to hurt them. In a competitive division race, avoiding preventable mistakes could determine how quickly Cincinnati steadies itself.
