The Cincinnati Reds are currently in last place in the NL West, and are 26th in the majors in team ERA. Meanwhile, the Reds have also been dealing with injuries to the pitching staff.
Now, the team is adding to the pitching staff , bringing in a former San Diego Padres and Miami Marlins pitcher, per Charlie Goldsmith of FOX19.
The Reds are signing veteran pitcher Chris Paddack to the staff. Paddack was recently designated for assignment by the Marlins.
Paddack was initially a draft pick of the Marlins in the 2015 MLB Draft. He would be traded before making his MLB debut, being sent to the Padres in 2016. He was traded again in 2022 to the Minnesota Twins , and then once again to the Detroit Tigers in 2025. Ahead of the season, Paddack signed a one-year deal with the Marlins. He was designated for assignment on May 5 and then released on May 10.
Paddack was 0-5 in six starts so far this year, with a 7.63 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP this season with the Marlins. He has not finished a season with an ERA below 4.00 since his first season in the majors in 2019. That year, he started 26 games, going 9-6 with a 3.33 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. Since then, he has had just one winning season. That was in 2024 when he went 5-3 for the Twins with a 4.99 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP.
The Reds are without Hunter Greene , who is out until midseason. Further, Brandon Williamson was recently placed on the 60-day IL, while Rhett Loweder was placed on the 15-day IL. This means Paddack could be making his debut with the Reds soon. Currently, the Reds do not have a projected starter for Friday's game against the Cleveland Guardians .
