The Cincinnati Reds are off to a hot start to the season, and Sal Stewart is one of the reasons why . The Reds infielder has been crushing home runs and helping Cincinnati out with some smart base running. Stewart is also helping to pick up the slack following an injury to teammate Eugenio Suarez .
Suarez had to hit the injured list after suffering an oblique strain. Without him, Stewart made the most of it. He drove in five runs for Cincinnati Saturday in a 9-2 win over the Detroit Tigers .
“Everyone knows how much I think of Geno. It’s going to suck not to have him hitting in our lineup,” Stewart said, per MLB.com. “He’s such a great player and he’s done it for so long. But at the end of the day, we’ve got to pick him up and that’s what this team is about. While he gets ready and heals up, we’ll find ways to go out there and help the team win. And we can’t wait to have him back.”
The Reds improved to 18-9 on the season with the victory. Cincinnati currently leads the NL Central.
Sal Stewart is helping to lead the Reds this season
Stewart has nine home runs on the year . He is currently tied for third in MLB in home runs with four other hitters. One of those other hitters is his Reds teammate, Elly De La Cruz . Stewart leads MLB in RBIs, with 29 so far on the season.
The hot hitting from Stewart and others is giving inspiration to the Reds pitching staff.
“That was awesome. The bats have been incredible,” starter Brady Singer said, who picked up the victory Saturday. “Just really good at-bats from our guys and putting runs on the board early. Obviously, it’s helping us out on the pitching staff.”
The Reds and Tigers play again on Sunday afternoon. Cincinnati is looking to sweep Detroit in the three-game series.
