Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Rhett Lowder was recently placed on the IL with an oblique injury. On Thursday, Reds manager Terry Francona shared an update on Lowder, via Charlie Goldsmith.
"He's going to throw today. We sat and talked to him for a while yesterday," Francona said. "He's doing a good job. By doing this, he's going to set himself up for the long haul."
Lowder, a 24-year-old right-handed pitcher, offers potential. The Reds believe he can be an impactful pitcher for years to come. The 2026 campaign has not gone according to plan for Lowder, however. He has pitched to a 5.40 ERA across eight starts this year.
The Reds will continue to monitor and provide updates on Rhett Lowder's injury status as they are made available.
The Reds are dealing with multiple injuries at the moment. Eugenio Suarez and Hunter Greene are among the Reds who are currently out with injury concerns .
Cincinnati has struggled in recent action, and playing without multiple stars has not helped matters. Overall, the ball club is 22-21. They are in last place in the National League West standings right now as well. The Reds had a strong start to the new campaign, and they are hoping to get back on track sooner rather than later.
The Reds will play the Washington Nationals on Thursday. Washington leads the series at the moment, as they won the first two contests. The game on Thursday afternoon between the National League teams is scheduled for 12:40 PM EST in Cincinnati.
