After five games of the Western Conference Finals, ESPN NBA analyst Richard Jefferson is keeping it real about how Victor Wembanyama is being defended this playoffs. Jefferson admits that Wembanyama has been dealing with a high level of physicality this playoffs.
But in the latest edition of the Road Trippin' podcast, Jefferson considers it "a part of the formula."
"Wemby is getting the crap beat out of him. That's what it takes. Kobe Bryant gets the crap beat out of him, Shaquille O'Neal would get the crap beat out of him, like I'm saying. Thats a part of the formula in the postseason is to be ultra physical with the other team best players. I'm not here to tell you it's right or wrong, I'm here to tell you the reality.
He continued, "Michael Jordan literally did a 6 episodes documentary of the Detroit Pistons beating the sh*t out of Michael Jordan, beating the actual sh*t out of him, and what did he do? He went in the gym had to get stronger. This is basketball history people, you get to the postseason ultra physicality. Is what it is."
The level of physicality could be what has worn on Wembanyama as their series against the Oklahoma City Thunder has progressed , following a historic Game 1 performance where he finished with 41 points and 24 rebounds. Wembanyama has been defended heavily by Oklahoma City big man Isaiah Hartenstein . On many occasions, Hartenstein has played physically with Wembanyama, and other members of the Oklahoma City Thunder who have been tasked with guarding him have as well.
How Wembanyama adjusts to the physical defense of the Thunder will ultimately be what determines if he makes his first NBA Finals this postseason.
