Richard Sherman was not impressed with the effort from Cowboys receiver George Pickens on Thursday Night Football.
In a 44-30 loss to the Lions, Pickens caught five passes for 37 yards on nine targets. When CeeDee Lamb left the game with a concussion, Sherman was expecting Pickens to step up and fill the void.
Instead, the former Seahawks cornerback believed Pickens disappeared, and he highlighted low-energy plays on the TNF postgame show.
“The big story here is George Pickens,” Sherman said. “George Pickens, throughout the game, especially late in the game, just looked uninterested. Uninterested in playing football. And that’s what you can’t have. If you’re going to be a superstar, if you want to be the best receiver in the National Football League, you can’t ever be disengaged. It doesn’t matter if the game is going your way or not going your way, you can’t just disappear in these games or else you’re not going to have impact.
“You’re the guy! You’re the guy!” Sherman continued. “CeeDee Lamb is not in this game, he’s out, and you get intercepted on your slant routes, and you can’t be the guy and (you) half-ass it. I’m sorry, it’s unacceptable and if you’re the Dallas Cowboys and you’re looking at him and you’re looking to pay him big-time receiver money, $40 million, you’ve got to look at this tape and say, ‘Hey, this is a guy we can trust paying $40 million to show up regardless of circumstance?’ I don’t know.”
Asked about Sherman’s comments after the game, Pickens agreed with part of the assessment, but urged the pundit to look at the coverages Detroit was deploying to slow him down.
“Definitely for myself, personally, you can’t disappear,” Pickens said, via Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “As a reporter or whatever his job holds, and he played ball, he has to understand the type of defense they played as well.”
