MLB rumors: Bob Nightengale thinks Phillies could fire Rob Thomson, hire Alex Cora appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
The Boston Red Sox made waves Saturday night in Major League Baseball, when the team announced manager Alex Cora was getting the boot. Boston also essentially cleaned house by firing a slew of coaches and other personnel. One MLB insider thinks Cora will not be unemployed for long.
USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale believes Cora could be hired almost immediately to manage the struggling Philadelphia Phillies .
“If Cora had not signed his three-year, $21.75 million contract extension last summer, Cora likely would have been managing the Phillies at the start of this season,” Nightengale wrote in his latest column on Sunday.
Nightengale’s words are mirroring the opinion of ESPN baseball insider Buster Olney. Olney argued on the Baseball Tonight podcast in recent days that the Phillies should consider trading for Cora in-season.
In order for this transaction to happen, the Phillies would have to fire manager Rob Thomson . Philadelphia has been mired in a disaster of a season so far, enduring a recent 10-game losing streak. Philadelphia finally snapped it on Saturday, by defeating the Atlanta Braves 8-5.
Boston is also out to a bad start. The Red Sox are 10-17, and fired Cora after his team dominated the Baltimore Orioles Saturday 17-1.
A big reason why the Phillies have been mentioned as a spot for Cora is because the former Red Sox manager has a history with Dave Dombrowski. Dombrowski is the president of baseball operations for the Phillies, but used to work for Boston.
“Now that Cora, 50, is available, the Phillies must quickly decide whether they want to remain patient with Thomson, wait until the end of the season to determine whether they want to pivot to Cora, or do they make a move now,” Nightengale added.
Both the Red Sox and Phillies are currently last in their respective divisions. Time will tell if Cora is back managing anywhere soon, including Philadelphia.
