KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals made some changes to the pitching staff on Wednesday after a disastrous day on the mound for Royals pitchers on Tuesday against the New York Yankees .
Left-handed pitcher Bailey Falter was designated for assignment (DFA) on Wednesday, with left-handed Mason Black being recalled from AAA Omaha.

The move comes after Falter's start on Tuesday, when he gave up seven runs to the Yankees in just two and a third innings. Falter gave up nine hits in those innings before being pulled for RHP Luinder Avila , who had struggles of his own but was able to eat three innings for the Royals ' pitching staff.
"Just didn't really have anything behind the ball today, so I don't know if that's just being in the bullpen for five days and then getting a start or not really having a role," Falter told MLB.com's Anne Rogers after the game. "Just rolling with the punches right now."
All in all, the Royals lost 15-1 on Wednesday. It's their 13th straight loss to the Yanks.
Falter was acquired at the 2025 trade deadline and never really found a role with the Royals. He pitched just 12 innings for KC in 2025 with an 11.25 ERA and just nine and two-thirds innings in 2026 with a 13.97 ERA after Wednesday.
Black, on the other hand, has thrown four and two-thirds innings for the Royals earlier this season. He's yet to give up a run, but is allowing just under two walks/hits per inning (WHIP).
