SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Seattle suffocated the Patriots offense in Santa Clara, sacking Drake Maye six times and putting an end to New England ’s upstart run to Super Bowl 60 in a 29-13 beatdown.
The Seahawks ’ pass rush was relentless, making it a long night for everyone on New England’s offensive line. Morgan Moses , Will Campbell and Jared Wilson all surrendered sacks of Maye, who was often terrorized by free runners. New England had no answers for Mike Macdonald’s defense.
The MVP runner-up was under duress much of the evening and far from his best, going 27-of-43 for 295 yards, throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions. Too often, Maye didn’t have enough time to operate, and even when he did, the second-year quarterback was off.
New England picked up five first downs on their first 10 possessions, one of which came via penalty. Those drives ended in eight Bryce Baringer punts, a strip sack, and the end of the first half.
The Patriots ’ defense kept them in the game until the fourth quarter thanks to some stingy play in their own territory. For the first three quarters, the game’s only points were four Jason Myers field goals.
Seattle finally found the end zone 1:32 into the fourth quarter, as Sam Darnold hit tight end A.J. Barner for a 16-yard touchdown on a coverage bust. The score gave Seattle a seemingly insurmountable 19-0 lead. Running back Kenneth Walker was also outstanding for the NFC Champions, carrying the ball 27 times for 135 yards.
There was a brief delay in the fourth quarter when a shirtless fan ran onto the field , and the Patriots responded with their most inspired offensive play of the night. After the stoppage, Maye hit Mack Hollins for a 24-yard explosive catch then a 35-yard touchdown on back-to-back snaps. The touchdown cut Seattle’s deficit to 19-7 and ensured the Seahawks wouldn’t pitch the first shutout in Super Bowl history.
Seattle added to their lead from there, though, as Myers hit his fifth field goal and then linebacker Uchenna Nwosu recorded a pick-six of Maye, who was getting walloped as he threw. New England answered with a late touchdown drive capped with a seven-yard Rhamondre Stevenson score to arrive at the 29-13 final.
As far as silver linings go, the Patriots received excellent play from their defensive backs, particularly Christian Gonzalez and Craig Woodson .
Gonzalez ran stride-for-stride with Rashid Shaheed , leaping to break up a first-quarter deep ball. In the closing moments of the second quarter, the Pro Bowl corner also broke up a pass intended for Jaxson Smith-Njigba at the goal line. In the third quarter, he broke up another pass intended for Cooper Kupp .
Woodson, meanwhile, didn’t look like a rookie in his Super Bowl debut, recording seven tackles, including three for a loss, and breaking up two passes, one of which was intended for Kupp at the goal line. While his draft mates struggled on offense, Woodson looked like a seasoned vet.
With the Super Bowl 60 loss, the Patriots finished Mike Vrabel’s first season 17-4.
