The shoe business in the NBA is a battlefield unlike anything else in professional sports. Giant companies such as Nike and Adidas dominate the field, signing the league's biggest stars to signature deals left and right, and pumping out sneaker lines that regularly sell for over $100 per pair.
However, on the flip side of the coin stands Shaquille O'Neal with his own unique philosophy. The legendary big man, drawing from his tough upbringing, decided he was going to take a completely different route. All it took was an unlikely encounter and a piece of motherly wisdom to show him why that path mattered so much.
"My thing is, it's all about affordability. I always tell the story. I was leaving the arena one day and this beautiful lady was dragging her son. I thought she was going for autograph, and she's, 'F-ck you, you charging our baby for the shoes," Shaq said in the recent episode "The Big Podcast with Shaq."
Mother's advice proved to be the right one
That moment with the woman, who clearly wasn't in a strong financial position, really stuck with the former Los Angeles Lakers big man. Even though the insult hurt him, Shaq remained calm on the outside, mainly because even he wasn't sure whether she had a point. So, just like many of us still do, Shaq turned to the one person on whose advice he could always count: his mother, Lucille. And when she reminded him of his own tough childhood, growing up in Newark without the luxury of expensive shoes, everything fell into the right place, and O'Neal had his "Eureka!" moment.
At the time, Shaq had a major Reebok deal on the table worth close to $40 million. However, since The Big Aristotle was already well-versed in the business side of things, he chose to go in a completely different direction and create a shoe line that is affordable, but also has that "swag" that the kids love. That's what was the motive behind the SHAQ line.
"I come home, I'm talking to my momma, thinking she's going to be on my side. She's like, 'Baby, the lady was right. Your shoes do cost too much… You ain't never had no shoes that cost more than 40 dollars.' So I said to myself, all right, I'm going to start my own line," O'Neal pointed out.
Affordable and available in "your" Wallmart
When the Shaq line finally launched, it was a dream come true for the big man. And somehow, in an era where sneakers are valued by money alone, The Diesel pulled it off. Most of his shoe designs are priced between $19 and $39 at Walmart, making them accessible to practically anyone at any time.
Because as much as O'Neal was a wrecking ball on the court, and arguably one of the most dominant players that ever touched a basketball. He also developed into a successful businessman with a keen sense of opportunity. But this time, he chose a different method. Instead of chasing the bag, he created something truly unique.
He wanted the kids who didn't grow up with financial privilege, like the one he once was, to walk into a store and say that they want to wear shoes of one of the greatest players ever.
