How social media reacted to devastating Caleb Wilson news
Everything looked up for the UNC men's basketball team. North Carolina (24-6, 12-5 ACC) has four straight wins and a double-bye in next week's ACC Tournament. In addition, Caleb Wilson was on track to play in the NCAA Tournament.
Whatever exuberance and hope Tar Heels fans have about their team, took a huge hit on Friday afternoon. Wilson, who broke his left forearm in a loss at Miami (Florida) but recently got his cast off, is out for the season.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported that, during a noncontact drill in Thursday's practice, Wilson broke his thumb while dunking.
With a healthy Wilson, UNC is an underdog NCAA championship contender. Wilson brings an elusive combination of speed, size, defense, electric dunking ability, lethal midrange jumpers and occasional 3-point shot.
Now, North Carolina will be without its freshman star and receiving this news at the worst possible time. Wilson leads the Tar Heels in several categories: points per game (19.8), rebounds (9.4), steals (1.5) and blocks (1.4).
Just like its past six games, UNC will continue looking for production elsewhere on its roster. Henri Veesaar's return from a brief injury is a blessing in disguise, while guys like Seth Trimble and Luka Bogavac are stepping up when needed most. Jarin Stevenson 's transfer back home looks even better now, as he brings the same size and defensive ability Wilson does, with a great shot in his back pocket.
