The Dallas Stars are in a tough spot with their salary cap after a first-round defeat at the hands of the Minnesota Wild . The Stars hoped that this could be one more run with their core group, as there were questions about whether Jason Robertson or captain Jamie Benn would sign contract extensions. However, Jim Nill is now facing the reality of losing both in the offseason, according to NHL.com's Derek Van Diest.
"So my plan is to reach out to [Robertson's] agent here in the next week or so, and that's our focus, is to get him signed," Nill said. "He's a big part of our team. We've drafted and developed him, and I think we want him to be a Dallas Star the rest of his career."
With Robertson's comments at the locker room clean-out day about his potential departure from the Stars, it feels like the talks between Nill and his agent won't go as smoothly as Nill thinks they will. However, Benn could fit much better into Dallas' salary structure, as their cap space is a bit limited.
"Jamie and I have talked just shortly," Nill said. "We're going to give him a couple of weeks, but I want him back. I think he wants to come back, but I'm going to give him that time. He needs to go through this and figure this out. The organization does want him back, yes."
While the Stars would miss Benn's leadership, it'll be Robertson's 96 points in 82 games this season that they'll miss the most if a deal doesn't come to fruition.
