Steelers request interview with Saints Hall of Famer, assistant coach

New Orleans Saints assistant offensive line coach Jahri Evans could have an opportunity to leave town and join the Pittsburgh Steelers . On Thursday, Alan Saunders of Pittsburgh Sports Now reported that the Steelers have requested permission to interview Evans for a role under new head coach Mike McCarthy. Earlier on Thursday, the Steelers also made plans to interview Saints quarterback coach Scott Tolzien for the offensive coordinator position on McCarthy's staff. If this is a lateral move, the Saints could block it, but there's nothing to be done if it's a promotion.

Evans, 42, has been on the New Orleans coaching staff since 2022 and an offensive assistant since 2023. Evans was also a five-time All-Pro and voted onto the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team as a guard with the Saints from 2006 to 2016. New Orleans selected him in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL draft out of Bloomsburg in eastern Pennsylvania. In 10 seasons with the Saints, Evans started 179 games and was a vital member of the Super Bowl XLIV championship squad. He finished his playing career in 2017 with the Green Bay Packers and is currently a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026.

Mike McCarthy was the head coach of the Packers for Evans' final season. Tolzien was also a backup quarterback for McCarthy for three seasons in Green Bay and an assistant coach for McCarthy with the Dallas Cowboys from 2020 to 2024. The Saints are the only team where Jahri Evans has coached but there's more familiarity than you may think for him waiting in Pittsburgh.s
