Stefon Diggs knew Drake Maye was going to be good when the wide receiver signed with the Patriots this offseason.
But did he think the second-year quarterback would have a season in which he was breaking team records and putting himself in the MVP conversation?
"No, I did not," Diggs told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo after New England 's blowout win against the New York Jets . "He surprised all of us. I knew he was going to be good, but nah, I didn't know he was going to be this good. I'm just super proud of him. He approaches this game in the right way, man. I look forward to seeing more of him. He approaches this game in the right way and I look forward to seeing more of him."
Maye went 19-of-21 for 256 yards and five touchdowns – four of which came in the first half of the 42-10 win . He also eclipsed the 4,000 passing yard mark .
The 23-year-old was a bright spot during his rookie season in 2024 despite the team posting a 4-13 record. Maye showed growth each week and took a step further in Year 2 en route to an AFC East division title .
Maye's chemistry with Diggs has also grown all season. The two connected for a touchdown in Week 17 — his fourth of the year.
The quarterback will look to carry the strong regular season into New England's Week 18 finale against the Miami Dolphins before they playoffs begin.
