Stephen A. Smith caused quite a stir when he accused Drake Maye of being a liar for not knowing what show Cam Newton is on.
Now, the ESPN personality is sort of walking back those comments.
“I was being facetious because it wasn’t that big of a deal,” Smith said on SiriusXM, via Awful Announcing. “In other words, Cam Newton is on national television. And your reaction was, ‘I don’t even know where he works.’ I just didn’t believe that. That’s all. I wasn’t calling him a liar about anything else. Just that he didn’t know where Cam works. But you are right, I don’t know Drake Maye, I’ve never spoken to him. Again, I was being facetious. I wasn’t being serious about that point.”
Newton, who’s on “First Take,” has been harsh on the Patriots and Maye and called New England’s success this season “ fool’s gold .” Maye was asked about the comments, to which he responded he wasn’t sure which show Newton was even on and was only worried about what those in the locker room thought.
That drew the ire of Smith, who went on a rant about the 23-year-old quarterback.
“He’s also a liar. First of all, it’s not to brag. Listen, ‘Pardon the Interruption’ is the No. 1 show on ESPN spanning 20-plus (years). ‘First Take’ is the No. 1 morning show 13 years and counting. April will be 14 years,” Smith said . “Don’t tell me you’re an athlete and you don’t know that. Don’t tell you you’re an athlete and you don’t know that Cam Newton is on this show. You’re lying.”
Newton joined ESPN in 2024 and only appeared on “First Take” once a week before his role expanded in August. It’s not entirely out of the realm that Maye is unaware what show Newton is part of, especially when it airs while the team is at Gillette Stadium preparing for practice.
Coach Mike Vrabel seemed a bit suspicious that “First Take” was the No. 1 show when it was mentione during his weekly appearance on WEEI.
“Is it? I find that hard to believe,” he said . “It’s not the SportsCenter that I grew up with.”
