FOXBOROUGH — Mike Vrabel said the Patriots will have a busy training staff on Monday.
The Patriots lost Will Campbell , Jared Wilson , Khyiris Tonga and Brendan Schooler to injuries in Sunday’s win over Cincinnati and were without Jahlani Tavai for personal reasons.
Vrabel gave updates all the status of all five during his Monday press conference ahead of Monday’s game against the New York Giants .
Will Campbell
The rookie offensive tackle was carted off with what has been reported to be a sprained MCL. Vederian Lowe replaced him at left tackle.
“He won’t be out there this week. We’ll make a decision on the roster this week and go from there,” Vrabel said. “It’s nothing, hopefully, that’s going to put him out for the entire season.”
Vrabel wasn’t sure if Lowe would be back at left tackle on Monday, but thought he responded well to being pressed into service on Sunday.
“I thought Vederian had a couple good plays. He hasn’t had to go in there for us,” Vrabel said. “Everybody just has to be ready for their opportunity. I thought he was for the most part. There’s some things we’ll have to continue to work on and clean up. Right now, it’s probably a little too soon to figure out what the lineup is going to look like.”
Jared Wilson
While an NFL Network report said Wilson could miss several weeks, with a high ankle sprain, Vrabel was noncommittal.
“It’s too soon to tell,” he said. “We’ll see how the week of practice goes, how the rehab goes. We’ll see how he responds.”
Vrabel said Ben Brown , who replaced Wilson, handled the assignment well.
“He was ready to go,” Vrabel said. “I thought he was into it. He gave great effort and he was ready for the opportunity.”
Khyiris Tonga
The defensive lineman left Sunday’s game, returned briefly and then was shut down.
“These guys want to go. I have to look at them and I have to figure out if they can,” Vrabel said. “If they can protect themselves and not make it any worse — from what I saw, he wasn’t going to be able to do those things. We’ll see how he progresses through the week.”
After the game, Tonga thought he’d let his teammates down. Vrabel would have none of that.
“Tonga is never going to let anybody down as long as he’s here,” Vrabel said.
Brendan Schooler
The special teams ace left with an ankle injury. Vrabel wasn’t sure what his status was.
“No update there,” Vrabel said.
Jahlani Tavai
Tavai missed Sunday’s game for personal reasons. Vrabel wasn’t sure whether he’d be available on Monday.
“I don’t (have an update). The players on this team and everyone in the organization care deeply about him,” he said. “Out of respect for his privacy, we’ll leave it at that.”
