Texas A&M freshman QB making strides during spring practice
Texas A&M's eighth spring football practice finished on Saturday afternoon, and one of the underrated offseason questions regarding the Aggies' backup quarterback battle between sophomore Brady Hart and freshman Helaman Casuga is beginning to heat up, especially for the former four-star newcomer who received substantial practice reps on Saturday.
A long-time commit in the 2026 signing class, Casuga could have decommitted after Texas A&M offensive coordinator Collin Klein departed to become Kansas State's head coach after the 2025 season, but stayed the course, feeling that new OC Holmon Wiggins and quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch would provide stability in the QB room, and help fast-track the Utah natives development.
Right now, current starting quarterback Marcel Reed isn't guarrenteed to return for a fourth season, leaving Hart and Casuga as the two future options that the coaching staff is looking to develop this spring heading into the the fall, and while Hart has the upper hand given his first season learning, and appearing in two games, Casuga's arm talent is hard to ignore.
However, Hart's accuracy, 6'4" frame and surprising athleticism, which has been on full display this spring, could give him the edge, but as I stated above, Casuga, who is wearing No. 19 in practice, just looked the part, while his accuracy and throw velocity, and athleticism outside of the pocket may lead to the freshman winning the backup job during the final days of fall camp.
Thanks to KBTX's Travis Brown, here are all of Helaman Casuga's reps during Texas A&M's eighth spring practice.
