Byron Buxton was just named an All-Star Game starter and has produced plenty of fun memories during his 12-year MLB career, but he may go down as one of the biggest what-ifs in Minnesota Twins history. One day after returning from a right hip impingement , the veteran center fielder and designated hitter was removed from Sunday's rubber match against the New York Yankees after aggravating his injury , via Aaron Gleeman.
Buxton's setback occurred after he was caught stealing for the first time since May 1, 2024. His stellar streak comes to an end at 37 consecutive stolen bags. Fans want to see him begin a new one right away, but frequent injury problems pose an obstacle.
The 2025 Silver Slugger and 2017 Platinum Glove winner has never played more than 140 games in a regular season and has reached the 100-mark only three times. It is quite impressive that he can produce at a high level after spending so much time on the injured list, but sooner or later, bad news arrives. The Twins (43-47) are unlikely to contend for an American League Wild Card slot unless the franchise cornerstone is healthy during the playoff push.
Buxton also has his personal goals. The 32-year-old is in the midst of arguably his best campaign yet, batting .269 with 25 home runs, 45 RBIs, a .326 on-base percentage, .574 slugging percentage and .900 OPS going into the series finale versus Yankees. If he maintains this terrific pace, Byron Buxton can earn genuine MVP consideration at the end of the season.
He has to stay in the lineup, though. Hopefully, the impactful right-handed batter can avoid an IL stint.
