In the 2000s, nobody epitomized toughness on and off the court more than All-Star forward Caron Butler . As a teenager who grinded on the streets and was arrested 15 times before even turning 15, Butler got a new lease on life through basketball, which allowed him to attend UConn and eventually become the 10th overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft.
After a successful stint with the Washington Wizards , where he made two postseason appearances, he joined Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks and became their second-best player. He averaged 15.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game to help the Mavs get off to a great 24-7 start.
However, disaster struck on January 1, 2011. Playing in front of his friends and family members, Caron suffered a gruesome knee injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season. However, what Dirk saw his teammate do left him in shock and awe.
Unparalleled toughness
Butler grew up in Racine, Wisconsin, so when the Mavs came to Milwaukee to play against the Bucks, it wasn't surprising to see the stands filled with familiar faces. However, the smiles on everyone's faces turned to concern after Caron went down awkwardly and immediately screamed in agony, clutching at his knee.
"Caron goes up for a rebound and just screams and lays on the ground. We're all rushing over there. I see that he literally tore his patellar tendon, and his kneecap had dislocated. It was sitting up on his thigh," Dirk, who was out with an injury but was with the team, recalled .
"I'm trying to dry heave. It was nasty. Our trainer was like, 'Oh my God. We need a wheelchair. Wheelchair.' That was one of the toughest things I've ever seen. Caron is pretty tough, so when he heard 'wheelchair,' and knowing he was in Wisconsin with his grandmother there and his family there, he was like, 'I'm not getting out of here in a wheelchair,'" the German superstar continued.
Using whatever strength he had left, Caron did the unthinkable.
"I watched him push his kneecap down by himself. Then he gets up and starts hobbling," Dirk shared . "You know how in the old Milwaukee Arena there was that track leading back to the locker room? He walked that on his own power. I said, 'This guy is built different.'"
Inspired the Mavs' title run
It didn't take long for the Mavs to receive the bad news. Caron suffered a ruptured right patellar tendon and a dislocated kneecap and missed the remainder of the season. It was a huge blow for a Mavs team that was looking to rise in the West.
But instead of getting down on themselves, Dirk shared that they rallied around Caron and were inspired by how he attacked his recovery and rehab to try to return to action.
"I would say he motivated us. He inspired us with the way he wanted to come back, fought through it, and attacked rehab. I mean, he was almost ready to play in that Finals series in 2011. He was a beast," the former league MVP conveyed.
"Every day, watching how he handled himself and how he attacked that rehab, that really motivated us. That inspired us during that 2010-11 run," the 7-foot sharpshooter stressed.
Sans Butler, the Mavs got significant contributions from veterans Jason Kidd, Jason Terry and Shawn Marion as they survived the West's gauntlet and overcame a talented Miami Heat squad to win the Larry O'Brien trophy in 2011.
