Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager left Tuesday's game against the Cleveland Guardians before taking an at-bat, creating concern for a club gaining ground in the American League West race.
Seager was set to hit third in the lineup at Progressive Field, but he never came to the plate. In the first inning, Cameron Cauley pinch hit for him, while Nicky Lopez shifted from second base to shortstop as Texas made a defensive adjustment.
The change drew attention because Seager has already dealt with multiple health issues this season. The Rangers shortstop missed time from May 18 to June 4 with lower back inflammation, then returned June 25 from a concussion-injured list stint after a collision at home plate.
Dallas Morning News's Evan Grant posted the first notice on X, formerly Twitter, as the Rangers made the early move .
" Corey Seager has been removed from the game before his first at-bat. We will keep you posted"
Former AP Sports writer Tom Withers also took to the platform with the club's explanation for the shortstop's abrupt exit:
"Rangers said SS Corey Seager was removed with back discomfort."
The update gave the sudden substitution context, especially given Seager's recent back history . The five-time All-Star entered the night hitting .182 with 10 home runs, an unusual line for a hitter known for timing, balance, and barrel control.
Back discomfort can affect every part of that swing. It can limit rotation, reduce lower-half stability, and make any aggressive turn through the baseball more difficult.
The timing is difficult for Texas. The Rangers entered Tuesday night 43-42, in first place in the AL West and riding a six-game winning streak after Monday's 6-3 win over Cleveland. Now they must wait for clarity on Seager while the infield covers expanded roles.
