While the Detroit Tigers have been dealing with questions like trading some big pieces, especially with the trade deadline approaching, there is no denying how disappointing the season has been for the team. As rumors will continue to surround the Tigers, manager A.J. Hinch would speak about the bright spots of the team and what would need to happen for there not to be an All-Star game this season.
When talking on MLB Network Radio, Hinch would say that if Detroit catcher Dillon Dingler is not selected to be an All-Star this season, "we probably shouldn't have the [All-Star] game."
A.J. Hinch on who deserves to be an All-Star on the Tigers
So far this season, Dingler leads all American League (AL) catchers with 19 home runs, 59 RBIs, and an .854 OPS to go along with a .262 batting average, as Hinch mentions other players that could be All-Stars for the team.
"I think if Dillon Dingler is not an All-Star, then we probably shouldn't have the game," Hinch said. "I rarely would make that bold a statement, but he is by far the most deserving candidate on our team, and he's going to be there, I don't think there's any doubt about that. Kevin McGonigal, in his first year, 21 years old, putting together some pretty epic at-bats, playing two positions, his WAR is off the charts, his contribution, and just his recognition, you know, within the game is growing. Obviously, Casey Mize , I think, is probably the guy you're talking about who's not getting enough love. Tarik Skubal always an option."
"It's funny, you know, our season has been frustrating on a lot of levels," Hinch continued. "It's also promising on other levels, and yet we're still going to rattle off four, potentially five All-Atars that are going to be in Philadelphia to represent our club, so that better times are ahead…but the recognition for the players as well deserves."
The Tigers are 36-49, which puts them fourth in the AL Central, as it remains to be seen who the All-Star selections for the team will be.
