The New York Yankees are patiently waiting for the return of ace Gerrit Cole . Now, manager Aaron Boone has revealed exactly where Cole stands in his injury rehab process .
He is now set to face hitters at Single-A Hudson Valley on Sunday, via Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News. From there, Boone and company will decide Cole's next steps.
The right-hander is making his return from Tommy John surgery. After missing the entire 2025 season, Cole is set to soon make his return. However, the Yankees are still going to be cautious with their approach. The last thing they want is to do is risk re-injury.
Still, New York is well aware that when Cole steps back into their lineup, they become a much more dangerous force. How he responds at Single-A will determine how quickly that return comes. He is still likely to require a further rehab assignment before making the full jump back to MLB.
Over his five years with the Yankees, Cole has produced a 3.12 ERA and a 915/185 K/BB ratio. He has been named an All-Star three times and won Cy Young in 2023. In his most recently played season, back in 2024, Cole put up a 3.41 ERA and a 99/29 K/BB ratio over 17 starts.
Yankees fans will still need to be patient, as Cole still has some hurdles to cross before he is on the major league mound. But barring any setbacks, the former Cy Young winner will soon be able to help New York forge forward in their World Series push.
