The New York Yankees have been without Jose Caballero after placing him on the 10-day injured list after he fractured his finger in the 4-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on May 10. However, it appears Caballero could be ready to return based on what Aaron Boone had to say in the latest update.
Caballero, who is 29 years old, claimed he feels ready to come off the IL , according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. Boone backed up that statement, saying that Caballero is expected to play by Friday's matchup vs. the Tampa Bay Rays .
" Jose Caballero said he feels ready to come off the injured list when eligible tomorrow," reported Hoch. "Aaron Boone said he expects Caballero to be 'in play.'"
The Yankees called Anthony Volpe up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace the four-year veteran in the lineup. When Caballero is eventually activated off the IL, it is not entirely clear what will happen with Volpe. That's a decision Boone will have to make in the near future.
Before sustaining the injury, Caballero was enjoying a solid start to the campaign. In 41 games, the Panama native owned a .259 batting average and .320 WHIP while recording 35 hits, four home runs, and 13 RBIs through 135 at-bats. He also had 13 stolen bases.
Once activated, Jose Caballero may fit right back into the starting shortstop position for the Yankees. However, Volpe has shown some improvements in his short time back in the Yankees' lineup . There is a possibility that Boone rotates Caballero and Volpe in and out of the shortstop position until further notice.
