Yankees predicted to cut ties with fan favorite after New York fans quickly fell in love with him originally appeared on The Sporting News . Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
No team in Major League Baseball has a superstar at every single position. That includes the Los Angeles Dodgers , who have one of the most stacked rosters the game has ever seen, if not the most.
The New York Yankees , like the Dodgers, have a very talented team, but that doesn't mean they don't have players who fill different roles.
One of the guys the Yankees tried to do that with is Max Schuemann , who was designated for assignment by the Athletics . Schuemann, who is quickly being viewed as a fan favorite despite only having 29 at-bats, is a decent player in his own right, though some are starting to believe that he won't be with the Yankees for much longer, with one writer recently predicting him to be designated for assignment.
"Schuemann was a fun story for a while, but the bloom has come off the rose a bit of late as he cools off at the plate. His on-base skills and defensive versatility are still extremely useful with the Yankees so short-handed on the position-player front. Once New York's regulars begin to return, though — plus a potential infield addition at the trade deadline — it's hard to see what role he'd play. This team already has its fair share of utility men who can hit lefty pitching between Amed Rosario and Jose Caballero ," Chris Landers wrote .
I'd hate to see a player that the Yankees really like be designated for assignment, as the fan base gets attached to certain guys and wants them to perform.
However, Schuemann hasn't exactly been great during his short time with the team, hitting just .207 with no home runs and an OPS of .740. He hasn't been bad by any means, but when the Yankees get healthier, there probably isn't much of a role for him to carve out.
