The New York Yankees are taking on the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Friday for the second matchup of a four-game series. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the rivalry seemingly reignited when benches cleared after Will Warren 's four-seam fastball was ruled a ball after going up and in on Willson Contreras .
The Red Sox's first baseman seemingly did not like Warren's pitch. After tossing his bat toward his team's dugout, Contreras shared some choice words with the Yankees ' 27-year-old right-hander while taking his base. Officials and players got in between the two, and both rosters cleared the benches to intervene in the situation. However, a fight did not break out as no punches were thrown. Only verbal jabs.
It is not entirely clear what was said in the spat between Willson Contreras and Will Warren. But it appeared to be enough of an issue for both teams to meet on the field. Once the dust settled, the matchup continued with the Red Sox leading the Yankees 5-0 through six innings of play.
Contreras is having himself a solid performance against the Yankees at Fenway Park on Friday. Through his first three plate appearances, the 11-year veteran has recorded two at-bats, totaling two hits, one home run, two RBIs, and a walk.
Meanwhile, it's been a bit of a tough outing for Will Warren. He's allowed seven hits, three walks, and five earned runs while failing to record a single strikeout through 6.0 innings of work. It is arguably Warren's ugliest performance so far this season.
