- How did Alabama football backup quarterbacks do vs Mercer? What Nick Sheridan said
Nick Sheridan was pleased with what he saw from Alabama football 's quarterback room against Mercer .
After Jalen Milroe left midway through the third quarter with three touchdowns, 186 yards passing and 43 yards rushing, the Crimson Tide's depth at quarterback was on full display with Ty Simpson , Dylan Lonergan and Austin Mack each getting playing time in the Crimson Tide's 52-7 win.
"I thought all of them did a nice job," Sheridan said. "Certainly, there was learning moments for each one of them, but as far as just execution and loving their unit, I thought those guys did a nice job. Every snap that you get is invaluable for their growth and development, but yeah, I thought all three guys did a nice job."
Simpson finished with 71 yards passing, completing five of his 10 pass attempts. He led the Crimson Tide on a 10-play, 62-yard scoring drive that ended in a 1-yard touchdown run by Richard Young.
Mack was the only backup quarterback to throw a touchdown, connecting with Rico Scott on a 31-yard touchdown pass. Mack completed 2 of 3 passes for 39 yards.
Lonergan had 23 yards passing, completing five of his six pass attempts.
"I was proud of the way they just handled everything, from the execution to just even the procedural things. They were making sure guys were lined up before we motion, all that stuff," Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer said Saturday after the Mercer win. "It was a good day."
