Luis Severino's player option decision is due soon, and it will send the A's toward either a rotation with depth or a search for reliable starters.

Luis Severino has a $22 million player option for the 2027 season, and the A's have already said they hope he'll be back.

Severino's market value is projected at well below what he'd be guaranteed to receive from the Athletics.

New A's GM Taylor Smith will have these two decisions to make over the next few weeks.

Severino will have five days after the World Series to decide his 2027 plans, with a looming lockout complicating his choice.

The Athletics entered the season with high hopes, and for good reason. Mark Kotsay said Monday it was unlike anything he has seen in his five seasons as manager. “Even as a player, I can’t recall a roster of your top five opening day players in the lineup going down and not having them for 60-plus games,” said Kotsay, who played 17 big league seasons.

There's a chance the A's ace hits the open market this offseason.

There will be many decisions for the A's to make following the season's end, but this one will be up to the A's ace.

Athletics pitcher Luis Severino has no pitched since late May after picking up an injury against the New York Yankees.
