Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer made NHL history Tuesday night. He played the entire five-minute overtime without leaving the ice, the first player to do it since the league began officially tracking real-time ice time in 2009-10. He ended that marathon shift by chasing down Nashville's Filip Forsberg in the closing seconds and knocking the puck away before he could shoot, and New York won 4-3 in a shootout. Schaefer led all skaters with 32:16 of ice time and added an assist for his 11th point of the season. Semyon Varlamov stopped 20 shots for his first win in 712 days after partial replacements of both knees.
