The Carolina Panthers officially announced the addition of quarterback Jake Luton on Monday.
Luton, 28, spent much of last year with the organization. He first joined the team in late July of 2023, eventually appearing in all three preseason outings and totaling three stints on Carolina's practice squad throughout the regular season.
With second-string passer Andy Dalton sidelined due to a quad injury for the next few weeks and preseason play beginning on Thursday, the Panthers have brought Luton back to fill the void. Head coach Dave Canales spoke about what he was looking for in Dalton's stead.
". . . and it's really just looking for somebody that we feel like can function in a pro offense," Canales told reporters this past Saturday. "So maybe somebody with a little bit of professional experience. So he's used to being under center, used to doing some of those things so we can really get a good look at our guys down the roster. At the end of these preseason games, we gotta be able to function and get our plays off to do that."
He and Panthers offensive coordinator Brad Idzik have already worked on the same sideline as Luton, who played for the Seattle Seahawks in 2021. Canales served as the team's passing game coordinator that season while Idzik was the assistant quarterbacks coach and offensive quality control coach.
In the corresponding move to make room for Luton, the Panthers waived/injured outside linebacker Kemoko Turay —who was signed on July 26.
