The Texas Tech football team has added another piece to the secondary through the transfer portal.
The Matador Club, Tech's NIL collective, announced on social media Thursday the commitment of defensive back Dontae Balfour . Balfour is the second member of the secondary to commit to Tech thus far, joining North Dakota State transfer Cole Wisniewski , who committed on Wednesday.
Balfour, who also announced his commitment on Instagram, spent the last two seasons at Charlotte , where he tied the school record with 11 pass breakups during the 2024 season. He's tied for the most in a single game in program history when he swatted away four in a 2023 contest and holds the Charlotte career record with 18 PBUs.
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound native of Starke, Florida, has one year of eligibility remaining after spending his first two seasons at North Carolina . With the Tar Heels, Balfour appeared in four games in 2022 and two during his redshirt season of 2021. He was rated a four-star prospect by 247Sports out of high school, ranking as the No. 17 cornerback in his recruiting class.
Balfour totaled 49 tackles and two interceptions this past season.
Texas Tech has three commitments out of the transfer portal as of Thursday afternoon.
