Back in 1929, both schools signed a 10-year deal to play in Dallas during the state fair The game stuck, and to show its gratitude, the fair donated the golden hat in 1941 However, it did start out bronze, but after a redesign in the 70s, it came back gold, and that's when it became the golden hat Since then, the winning school's athletic department keeps it until the next game Two teams, one cowboy hat, and a whole lot of brighton rights.
