The San Francisco 49ers have made it extremely clear that they are not shopping backup quarterback Mac Jones and prefer to keep him in place as Brock Purdy's backup heading into the twenty twenty-six season.
According to The Athletic, Deanna Russini has said San Francisco is not looking to part with Jones, a stance that aligns with comments made by both Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch at the end of the twenty twenty-five season.
Shanahan said, "I'd be very surprised if Mac wasn't around us next year.
As with any player on our team, including myself and John, we- you always listen to people with trade offers, but we're not into getting rid of good players."
Obviously, Mac Jones signed a two-year deal heading into the twenty twenty-five season, a move that turned out to probably be one of the best the organization has made in a while.
When Purdy went down with turf toe, Jones stepped in in the starting role immediately and helped steady a team dealing with significant injuries.
In eight starts, Jones went five and three, posted a sixty-two point nine QBR rating, threw for thirteen touchdowns, six interceptions, while averaging nearly two hundred and seventy yards passing per game.
From the organization's perspective, the depth has been critical.
Purdy missed-- has missed time in every single season due to injury in all but one of his seasons as a starter, and the 49ers experienced firsthand how costly a lack of reliable quarterback insurance can be in previous years.
Jo- John Lynch, general manager of the 49ers, said, "Mac made this place better.
He picked us up in a huge way.
He's got an infectious attitude that affected everybody on our team, especially that quarterback room.
We're a better football team with Mac Jones on our roster."
Obviously, other teams can come in and offer him trades, and things can change.
If the 49ers were ultimately presented with a trade offer too strong to ignore, CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan has floated a contingency plan.
A reunion between Shanahan and Kirk Cousins.
Cousins, currently on the Atlanta Fa- Falcons, is widely expected to be available this off-season after starting eight games in twenty twenty-five, while Michael Penix Jr. was recovering from an ACL injury.
Shanahan's long-standing affinity for Cousins dates back to their time together in Washington, and the quarterback has been linked to San Francisco several times over the years.
Still, any Cousins scenario appears strictly hypothetical at this stage.
While the trade market bears watching, all signs point to Jones returning to- in the red and gold in the twenty twenty-six season, unless someone forces the 49ers' hand.
