How Andrew Catalon landed a role on the Masters broadcast | Subpar
Subpar's Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz are joined by CBS Sports Andrew Catalon who reveals his first golf assignment and how it led to his current role at the Masters.

I wanted to ask you about the Masters, because I believe you started out there, like, doing the digital stuff, right?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
So I need to know what that moment was like when you got the call to be informed you were moving up to the main broadcast for the first time, and what was your first Masters like?
Yeah, so I did the digital, you know, a, feature group and, and that type, for 10 years.
Oh, wow.
My first one was, was Schwartzel.
And then 2020, with COVID, I did it from my basement, and that was my last one, digital.
Then 2021 was my first one on the main broadcast.
So, you know, look, I, I think I may have told you guys this before, but being at CBS now for over 15 years, it became very clear to me early on that the golf team was something special and something different.
I had never announced golf before I got to CBS.
And, and when I saw the way that those people were not only looked at, but treated, and the way that they had these, these, bonds and how close they were, that is when I really wanted to get into a- announcing golf, when I saw how special the CBS team was.
So that was something that I kind of started, you know, even before I was calling NFL games, that I was like, you know, telling my agent, "I wanna be involved with this team."
And then when I got to CBS and saw, I'm like, "This is definitely the path I wanna go on."
And so those feature group, First of all, everyone, as we know, watches for the- Yeah for Augusta.
You know what I mean?
So it's huge.
And, and that was really how I got my first reps announcing golf.
It was at the Masters.
I had not announced golf before being on the feature group.
So those 10 years were, were so helpful for me.
It led me to get into the spot in, in 2019 where I, I filled in, on an off week, for Nantz, and I was in the tower at the 3M.
Colt, I remember you played that event- Mm-hmm for two da- for two days.
Two days.
Correct.
And- Yeah.
And then, uh- Yeah.
That's right.
But that was huge.
It Yeah, sorry.
And then, and then, yeah, then there was an opening with, with Bill McAtee, you know, retiring from, from announcing.
And, and, when I got that call, that was really, like, a, you know, it's easy to say, but, like, a dream come true.
It was something that I had envisioned for a long time, worked hard at it, and, and got the chance, so that wa- that was definitely huge.
But those ti- th- those years on, on feature group, w- well, I mean, Billy Kratzer taught me so much.
Billy Ray Brown and I, not only did we have a blast, and we still do, but, but he taught me so much.
I just learned from these guys, and that, I owe them so much.
