Aroldis Chapman Triggers Option in Contract in Win Over Pirates
The Red Sox All-Star closer will be sticking around for 2027 after triggering a clause in his contract.

The Red Sox defeated the Pirates four-nothing on Saturday night, evening up their three-game set at PNC Park at one game apiece.
Aroldis Chapman locked down the win for the Sox, tossing a scoreless ninth inning, which eclipsed forty innings pitched on the year, which triggered a clause in his contract that all but guarantees he'll remain in a Red Sox uniform for the twenty twenty-seven season.
Now, if you remember, Chapman signed a one-year, thirteen million dollar extension with the Red Sox in August of twenty twenty-five, but it had a mutual option for the twenty twenty-seven season, which became a guaranteed year worth thirteen million dollars if Chapman pitched forty innings in twenty twenty-six and passed an end of year physical.
Of course, he just eclipsed that forty inning mark, so now it'll come down to him passing a physical at the conclusion of the season for him to remain in a Red Sox uniform beyond the twenty twenty-six season.
Chapman's been a revelation for the Red Sox since signing with the team two years ago.
He's been among the best relievers in baseball and undergone a career revitalization, really, after struggling the last couple years with several different teams.
He's posted a one fifty ERA since the start of the twenty twenty-five season, and he's been one of the most valuable relievers in baseball, with a win probability added of five point six seven, which is the second highest mark among all relief pitchers, only behind the Padres' Mason Miller.
Of course, he has looked shaky as of late, and he's starting to look every bit of that thirty-eight years old that he is.
So it wouldn't surprise me to see Craig Breslow go out and maybe try to get another established high leverage arm in case the cliff does arrive for Chapman.
But it appears, at least for now, that he'll be back in a Red Sox uniform for the twenty twenty-seven season.
