The two thousand and twenty-six season is bound to be a pivotal one for Cleveland Guardians catcher Bo Naylor, who is looking to secure his spot in the team's future.
Now, Bo Naylor, we know, was one of the Cleveland Guardians' top prospects back in two thousand and twenty-two, known for being a solid defensive catcher, but could also establish some power at the plate as well.
And while the defense at the Big League level has overall been fine, the offense and the power consistently just has not been there for Bo, and with other guys like Cooper Engel and Jacob Cozart eventually coming up through the system, Naylor needs to show something to the organization that he should be the long-term answer for the team.
And with that, FanGraphs ZIPS Projections does view Naylor to have an improvement of the se-- of next year compared to what, where he was in two thousand and twenty-five, with the computer model projecting him to slash two sixteen, three oh three, three ninety-seven, over four hundred and thirty-four plate appearances, and those stats would include nineteen doubles and sixteen home runs as well.
At this point in Bo Naylor's career, we know he's not going to be a guy who hits for average, and what the Guardians really need out of him is some pop in his bat.
And with that, they are projecting that his OPS is going to jump from six sixty-one in two thousand and twenty-five to seven hundred in two thousand and twenty-six, which is an encouraging sign for Bo, considering how poorly and how much he struggled at the plate at times last year.
And the biggest reason for this improvement from ZIPS is that they're really expecting him to take a massive jump with his on-base percentage next season.
The model predicts, predicts him, like I said, to have a jump of about twenty points from where he was a year ago, which would be a very welcome addition for Cleveland's lineup.
Last year, Naylor had a walk rate of ten point nine percent in two thousand and twenty-five, which was great improvement from two thousand and twenty-four, and the computer is projecting Naylor to finish with about that in two thousand and twenty-six as well.
So the key difference here is that the model is predicting Naylor to be a lot more contact-oriented and get his on-base percentage up because of hits, not necessarily walks, which again, is very encouraging, too.
Bo made a mid-year swing change in two thousand and twenty-five, and this may be something the model is not accounting for because after the All-Star break last season, Bo had a really, really nice stretch, especially in September, when he had an eight seven two OPS and delivered multiple clutch hits for Cleveland.
If Bo can pick up where he left off in two thousand and twenty-five, this model actually may be a little bit underselling what Bo can do for the Guardians in two thousand and twenty-six.
And let's hope that's the case, because we know the Guardians definitely need some more help on the offensive side of things.
