Should The Carolina Hurricanes Run With A Bussi-Kochetkov Goaltending Tandem?

The Stanley Cup Champions lost a solid veteran goaltender in the summer and didn't replace him despite having a ton of cap space. How viable is that strategy?

Video Transcript

Yes, and any other team, I'm worried about that goaltending tandem that you just mentioned for all the reasons you just mentioned.

You, you got an unproven Bussey still.

You got Kochetkov, who, you know, we're s- kind of, we expected him to be that next goalie, but, you know, maybe that's not gonna happen.

But again, it's Carolina.

Is there an easier team to play net for than the Carolina Hurricanes?

Like, you've got Rod Brind'Amour basically coaching the entire team to play defense, or at least a strong 200-foot game.

So, you know, it, it makes playing net so much easier.

It's not like he's going into Edmonton.

If this was Edmonton's tandem, boy, oh boy, I, I do not wanna be Mike Babcock.

But again, Carolina can get by with this.

I know we're gonna be talking about EBUGs later on, but there was a reason why their EBUG was able to win a game years ago against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

It's because it's the Carolina Hurricanes.

Basically, the entire team plays defense.

There you go.

Michael Angiello, what do you think?

I think it's a trouble area for the Hurricanes.

N- you know, I Now, Freddie Andersen didn't play that much during the regular season, but once the playoffs got there, he was the guy, and Bussey did come in in relief, and I think Bussey was the main reason they won in the final over, over Vegas.

Clearly, Rod Brind'Amour does not trust Pyotr Kochetkov.

He does, y- I don't think he likes him and, and likes the way he plays.

You know, in past years, he's had to play him because other goalies like Antti Raanta or Andersen were hurt.

I think there's no This is one of the reasons why Carolina has been connected with Halak, maybe with another goaltender like Connor Ingram, who's still out there as an, as an unrestricted free agent.

I mean, if Kochetkov goes down during the season, do you really wanna rely on Caiden Primeau to be your number two goaltender?

That worked really well in Toronto, by the way, so.

I mean, we'll, we'll see what happens, but I think they could use an upgrade in goaltending m- behind Bussey at the, at the absolute l- least.
