Video Transcript

News, Kara, as we were getting ready for another showdown between the old foes Woody Kincaid and Grant Fisher, the two-time Olympic medalist.

They went very close to it the other night in the men's 10,000.

Unfortunately, Grant has just withdrawn and scratched from this event.

Well, here we have Cooper Teir.

He was fourth at the Olympic trials in 2021, barely missing out on that Olympic team behind Woody Kincaid.

He's focused on the 5,000 the last couple years, fifth last year at the championship, fifth in 2023.

He is the 2022 1500 meter US champion, so he has speed.

He trains with Olympic champion Cole Hocker, and he's ready.

He's ready to step up and become one of those top three guys in the 5,000.

Woody Kincaid, who won the 10,000 on Friday night, is ready to try and do the double.

Can he?

Nike Men's 5,000 underway.

The Nike Men's 5,000 meter race will now commence on the track.

You know, I'm looking across the field here, and I think that Woody Kincaid might also- Yes, I don't see him be a scratch here.

I don't see him.

So this turns out to a very different race.

These men all went to bed thinking Grant Fisher and Woody Kincaid were gonna be in the race, and Grant Fisher was probably thinking about how he could redo the 10,000, and now these men have come to a very different race, and there's a lot of men in this field that have either ran rounds of the steeplechase or the 1500, and even the finals, in this race right now.

So not a ton of fresh guys in this race right now.

Cooper Teir is one of the few athletes that is fresh for this right now.

Kind of opens it wide up, doesn't it?

It does, and it gives people a chance to win a national championship, learn how to run tactical racing without some of those heavy hitters in there.

You know, sometimes you think, "Well, Grant Fisher's in the race, Woody Kincaid's in the race.

Maybe I'm racing for third," but when they're not there, it really opens up the opportunity that you could win.

They're really realizing this is a real move and we have to go with it, and he's making a press here.

I think Cooper Teir knew that it was happening.

Cooper started to edge up.

Now look at the pace start to lift up.

Camerieri, who's been at the front, in the front three or four runners the entire race.

Cooper Teir, who led a good way just ahead of Sam Prael, behind Sean McGorty.

Well, this is a big move.

This is the fastest That was the fastest lap by far, a 61-second lap.

So that's why you've got, see them now suddenly strung out and along, but it's who will be able to carry this pace?

They still have two laps to go here, and who is gonna really push this thing for the final two laps?

We see Cooper Teir now move out and look up.

Ryan Shoppy leads the way- Ryan Shoppy with just 800 meters to go, ahead of Anthony Camerieri.

Taking it out past the 5,000 meters, just coming through 4200 meters there.

Cooper Teir has edged his way up into third, and Sam Prael is going with him, ahead of McGorty.

Well, Prael looks really good to me.

You know, we know him more as a 1500 meter runner, but he does do a lot of strength-based work.

He's a great 3,000 meter runner, and he's sticking in this right now.

If they leave it up to a kick, he could be very dangerous.

Sam Prael, the athlete you're looking at, is a two-time national champion indoors at 1500 and 3000.

This could be his first outdoor title.

He sits fourth at the moment, with a lap and a half to go.

You know, no one looks like they are straining or on the ropes yet.

Everyone looks very secure.

That was a 60.4-second lap.

They are really moving now, and what will they have in this final 500?

And did that decisive, will that decisive move from Ryan Shoppy pay off as they come to the bell?

One to go, to decide a national champion.

Well, Lewis, look who's moving on the outside right now.

Vincent Ciani, who was second in the 1500 meter final yesterday, frustrated to not be able to take that win.

Now he comes from way in the back to move up now and try to kick with these guys.

But he might be feeling that 1500.

There he is, and now they're starting to turn up the heat.

Neville Bob, Camerieri.

Vincent Ciani says, "I'm not done with you yet."

He's on the left, fighting hard.

Ratcliffe is going with him as well.

Thomas, he's been ever present probably the last three or four laps.

Sam Prael's trying to hang in there.

Camerieri, Neville Bob, Ciani.

Here comes Cooper Teir.

Thomas Ratcliffe's trying to go with them as well.

Vincent Ciani, Cooper Teir, Sam Prael's coming on.

Prael's trying to go with them.

Vincent Ciani may not have got the 1500, but he's got the 5.

Redemption for yesterday.

Vincent Ciani of Maryland, at the age of 31, is a national champion.

Vince Ciani drops a 54.3- Just like we saw in the women's race, someone who wanted redemption from that 1500 meter final.

54.36 for the final lap for Ciani.

We really didn't see him the whole race, and here he's kicking so hard.

He has that 1500 in his legs from just yesterday.

But look at, he's able His knee lift is not very good, but he's able to keep that stride ticking over, and he wins his first national title.

Incredible effort out of him.

Cooper Teir ran a very smart race, and Sam Prael, the 1500 meter guy as well, comes in for third.

Well, Vincent has won multiple road mile championships, but now he gets his first outdoor national track championship.

At the age of 31, Lewis, never say never.

He's a national champion.

Never say never.

Finishing second yesterday, saying he wanted this moment this weekend, and you just got it.

How did you get this done to get this championship after yesterday?

Yeah, I mean, took a little bit of mental fortitude.

I wasn't I executed okay yesterday, but I came off of it just a little frustrated, and I was just so happy to have another chance today.

I wish my mom could've been here for it.

Mm-hmm.

The plan was to try to win yesterday.

She went home today, but she's watching on TV, and I'm sure she's happy.

Awesome.

I'm sure she is.

Congratulations, Vincent.

Thanks, Lewis.

All righty.

Thanks.

You should be happy, Mom
