yesterday we talked a little bit about, the Miles Garrett trade to the Rams and what it meant for the Cowboys in week 15.
What we didn't talk about, as we went from maybe the fastest developing trade in NFL history with Garrett to the Rams, to maybe the slowest developing trade in NFL history, and that is A.J.
Brown to the Patriots.
And look, the NFC East, and there are other changes we'll get into, the NFC East woke up this week and chose chaos, and that is what we are dealing with.
The Cowboys are also back on the field for OTAs.
We'll get into some of that here in a little bit, but the entire NFC just got flipped upside down, like somebody decided to hit a panic button in June.
A.J.
Brown, as we mentioned, gone from Philadelphia after what, a year and a half, two years of rumors of him and Jalen Hurts not getting along or whatever the chaotic, toxic situation is in that locker room.
he is the first domino to fall, and look, I will tell you, I don't think A.J.
Brown is toxic.
I don't think he's a troublemaker.
I also don't think he is a solver of problems, and when the toxicity in the locker room reaches him, or even involves him, he's not a guy that, that's just gonna lay quiet and kind of lay low and, and squash any of it.
He just likes to run his mouth.
So while he maybe not maybe isn't the starter of rumors or the source of the toxicity, I also don't think he did anything to squash it or to stop it.
He might have perpetuated it a little bit.
So, the first domino to fall, one of those draft picks that they got back was a The, the first-round pick they got was a 2028 first-round pick, not a 2027 first-round pick.
they did get a 2027 fifth-round pick, but I think the 20- the fact that it's a 2028 first-round pick might be telling us a little something.
And look, I don't know if Howie Roseman asked for the 2028 first-round pick, or if that's simply the best first rounder that the Patriots offered or would agree to, but I think it's a little telling that that first-round pick is 2028, because wh- I think things are about to shake up in Philadelphia.
I think the actual source of the toxicity, your quarterback, Jalen Hurts, his days are numbered.
And I think the Eagles, Howie Roseman, who's really good at doing this with contracts and, and swapping picks and I don't know how he does it.
He's not the only one, though.
I think there's some writing on the wall here that he thinks that they may be going through, not a r- obviously a rebuild, there's way too much talent on that roster for a rebuild, but maybe a bit of a retooling, as I think Jalen Hurts is gone, if not during the year , after this year.
and they may be grooming a quarterback, and they may need a 2028 first-round pick, or they may flip that 2028 first-round pick into a quarterback somehow.
So anyway, that's kind of off topic there, but that was running through my head.
but it's a monster move no matter how it's spun, right?
Brown's not just a receiver.
I think he's a tone-setter.
he and Jalen Hurts absolutely did not have the best chemistry.
They were n- very rarely on the same page up there.
but he was a dude that defensive coordinators had to circle in red ink every single week.
And for the Cowboys, all of this changes the math in the NFC East.
does it make the Eagles harmless?
Absolutely not.
I don't wanna get stupid trying to talk myself into that.
But when a division rival moves a guy like A.J.
Brown out of the conference, I think it's okay for Cowboys fans to sort of raise an eyebrow and go, "Hmm, that's gonna help things."
And I think it will.
Meanwhile, right up the turnpike in New York, well, New Jersey, the Giants apparently decided to put together a 2019 fantasy football team.
Odell Beckham Jr., Braxton Berrios, Juju Smith-Schuster, all signing one-year deals with the Giants after a workout.
And that's three names, it's a lot of headlines, and it's a whole bunch of questions about what might be left in the tank for all of these guys.
Out of the three, I would hazard a guess that Smith-Schuster's probably got the most amount left.
I saw Odell Beckham a couple of years ago in Baltimore, and it was miserable.
And that was a Baltimore team that desperately needed him to step up, and he simply couldn't.And then he was in Miami last year, not for very long, didn't play a lot.
I, I don't You know, when he signed with the Giants I thought it's so he could go retire a Giant, honestly.
I can't believe he's gonna be at a training camp, but we'll see what happens with that.
I, I'm not very confident any one of these guys, maybe Smith-Schuster can find a spot on the roster, maybe.
But, I mean, I kind of understand why they did it.
Look, Malik Nabers is coming off the torn ACL.
New head coach Jon Harbaugh said he's already, you know, avoiding the prediction about when Nabers will be fully cleared to come back.
So the Giants need bodies, I get it.
They need options.
They need something at wide receiver.
But Cowboys fans don't lose sleep because the Giants added three receivers with more name recognition than current fear factor.
So that's the small earthquake in the NFC.
The absolute bigger earthquake, we talked about it yesterday, Miles Garrett now a Ram.
We talked about the Cowboys week 15 trip to LA, how it just went from a difficult notch on the calendar to downright nasty.
And again, the Rams go all in trying to win another Super Bowl in their home stadium, because apparently that franchise has just two settings, either rebuild quietly or throw every single draft pick you have into a bonfire and chase a ring.
Jared Verse going to Cleveland, I'm excited about.
the other draft picks maybe not so much, 'cause I have zero faith in Andrew Berry.
You guys wanna talk about the Cowboys not having faith in their, quote, "general manager", I don't know how Andrew Berry still has a job up in Cleveland.
This is the guy that pushed the, Deshaun Watson contract, by the way, on his ownership, who probably will be starting in Cleveland this year.
So there's a storyline for you if you wanna watch potential train wrecks.
but look, Dallas gets the pleasure of seeing Garrett in December.
We talked about it on yesterday's show, and I'm sure that's exactly what Dak Prescott was looking forward to late in the season, right?
Coming off the bye week.
so all of that brings us to this, OTAs.
because while the rest of the league is making headlines, Dallas is still working.
maybe the first question on the board, and we'll get into some of these more in depth as we get a little bit more into summer here, who's gonna be QB two?
We've touched on it on this show in the past couple of weeks, but this, this is a position battle that's going to fascinate me maybe through to, through preseason.
clearly Dak Prescott is the guy, we know that, but behind him the Cowboys have a real competition between Joe Milton and Sam Howell.
Milton has the big arm, he's got the highlight reel tools.
he's the one that will every now and then throw a ball that makes you question physics.
But the Cowboys have made it pretty clear they want more competition, and they brought in Sam Howell on a one-year deal to do that.
And Howell has started NFL games.
Sam Howell beat the Cowboys in his very first NFL start, if you remember a couple of years ago- Uh-huh when he was with Washington.
And since then he's been through the fire, he's taken hits, he's made mistakes, and he has played meaningful snaps.
And all of those things matter when you are talking about a backup quarterback job.
But let's be very clear here, nobody wins the QB two battle in OTAs, nobody's getting crowned the backup to Dak in shorts and helmets, but you can absolutely learn what the coaching staff thinks by watching the reps.
If Howell and Milton are splitting second team work, then I think this thing will remain wide open into, into training camp.
If Howell starts getting a little bit more workload, that'll tell you something.
if Milton starts to flash a little bit and starts getting more snaps, that also tells you something.
aside from that the, obviously the biggest question is what will this Cowboys defense look like this year?
We all think it's gonna be good, right?
We all think it's gonna be better, and I certainly believe that.
This is absolutely not last year's group.
Christian Parker is the new DC.
Dallas could roll out as, as m- as many as six new starters on this thing, and that's not just a roster tweak, that is a rebuild.
It's a fresh coat of paint, it's a fresh coat of violence, if you will, with some of these guys.
Jaylon Thompson, Caleb Downs, Rashan Gary, Dee Williams Dee Williams.
Dee Winthers.
Billy Dee Williams, your newest Dallas Cowboy.
Kobe Durant, Chavon Revel.
There's a lot of new And I know he's not new, but injury.
there's a lot of new toys here and Parker has to figure out how to make all of it fit.
and from everything we can tell, Dee Winthers at middle linebacker is going to be fascinating, because that's not what he's done for most of his career.
I am very anxious to see if he can handle it, how much they're gonna ask him to do, if in fact they put him there.
We, we don't know.
Caleb Downs obviously another massive piece here.
If he's working in the nickel, I think that's very exciting, but where does he fit in the base looks and how does that impact, how does that impact Jaylon Thompson?
and what about Malik Hooker?
Will his career be revived under Christian Parker?
I think it will.
We did a show about that.And on the outside, does Kobe Durant take starting reps, or does Chavon Ravel push himself into that conversation maybe earlier than we thought?
That's what the OTAs are for.
Not final answers, not final roster movement, but just some clues.
and, on another note here, let's give some credit where credit is due.
The Cowboys PR staff, bless their hearts, won the 2026 Pete Rozelle Award from the Pro Writers Football-- Pro Football Writers Association.
It's easy for me to say.
and that is a big deal in the business, boys and girls.
It's the first time in franchise history that the Cowboys, unit has won that.
The award recognizes an NFL public re-relations staff for excellence in working with the media, and this past year, that was not easy.
you know, the passing of Marshawn Neeland was an incredibly difficult situation.
The staff handled that with precision.
they had to kind of balance access of information regarding it.
It was a touchy situation.
They had to balance that with professionalism, you know, grieving players, a grieving family and friends, and they had to balance that against privacy.
So that was an incredibly awkward situation.
Maybe that's not the right word, but that's what it was.
and they handled it I think I commented at the time, I was like, "I can't believe how well this thing's going through," just because of the situation that it is.
So yeah, we talk a lot about what happens on the field, but today the people behind the scenes are being recognized, and we needed to recognize at-- that too.
So, all of these things happening in football, I mean, the NFL is a, it's a year-round product now, right?
It, it con- it controls and dominates the calendar 12 months out of the year now, and we're seven months away from football.
but-- We're not seven months.
Why did I say seven months?
what are we?
Four months away.
Four months away from actual football.
I don't know where seven came from.
But we're four months away from football, and we're talking about it like there's a game tomorrow, and we do that all summer long.
We do that all year long.
Kudos to the NFL for, for establishing themselves as a, as an absolute year-round product now, and something I mean, it's what we wanna talk about, right?
It's what everybody wants to talk about.
But that's the mission for today, boys and girls.
Keep your eyes on lots of things.
