Jalen Duren remains a restricted free agent, and the calendar is flipping to September.
Despite months of negotiations, Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons have not agreed on a new deal yet, and training camp is just around the corner.
Neither side has many options available, as the Pistons don't have a way to replace Duren if they lose him, and Duren may be sacrificing the biggest payday of his career.
Brett, what's the latest on Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons contract negotiations?
Jalen Duren will be back with the Pistons for the '26-'27 NBA season, and all signs point to them agreeing to a new long-term extension.
However, to this point, negotiations have not gone well for both sides.
Whereas Duren and his camp view himself close to being a max player and want to be paid as one of the best centers in the NBA coming off an All-Star and All-NBA season, the Pistons have not wanted to exceed $35 million annually.
Obviously, there's some common ground and some middle ground that could be found on a new extension, but the damage has been done in these negotiations.
There are absolutely ill feelings between the two sides, and Jalen Duren and his camp feel disrespected by the Pistons for not giving him the offer that he wanted early in free agency.
That's why he went out and took meetings with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings when the free agency window first opened, and why he was exploring sign-and-trade routes, which Detroit was not willing to explore.
Whether or not he actually finishes this new extension with the Pistons and remains there past the '26-'27 season is the big question at hand.
