Mike, as the Red Wings look primed for a playoff appearance this season, everything really seems to be going right for them right now.
Do you think that that D core is strong enough to potentially go past the first round in the playoffs?
It's sort of top-heavy because Seider is in that mix of Heiskanen, and, Hughes, and Makar as, you know, Put- Werenski as potential Norris candidates.
He's that type of defenseman.
I think, I think Edvinsson is climbing, and he's gonna be somebody, somebody that they have to pay coming off a ZLC, and Sandin Pelka was a first-round pick and is very talented.
but I think he's a year or two away from really being able to step into a top four role.
I mean, he's, he's excellent, but I think that's putting too much on his plate.
The rest of that group are basically journeymen, veteran defensemen.
Hamonic has been all over the place.
I was a little surprised at the Chiarot signing.
He's 34 years old.
He's a zero offensively.
He's a steady guy, but, you know, f- and even with the cap going up, 3.85 million is not chicken feed, so I, I, I don't, I don't know about that.
And remember, Steve Yzerman is the guy who signed Justin Holl to a three-year contract, and he's horrendous.
So, I mean, you know, Chiarot's better than that, and he's stable, but three years may be a year too long, and 3.85 million is a little much, but if they like him, then whatever.
Frank, what do you think about just the Red Wings D core as a whole?
Do you think that they're built to sustain a lengthy playoff run?
I think if you get Luke Schenn, you could easily do that.
I think Luke Schenn could be a guy Detroit gets in on the cheap, you know, brings in.
He's got some experience.
Maybe he works with a guy like Seider, you know, helps elevate his game.
You know, we talked about this with Rasmus Dahlin about taking the pressure off.
Seider has been phenomenal.
Like, the, the guy is one of the best defensemen in the NHL.
Like, there's not much more I can say, but if you bring Y- you know, you look back at what Ajella said about the Boston Bruins and their playoff runs.
You know, you had guys like McQuaid in there who, you know, were a depth defenseman.
You know, it wouldn't hurt to bring in Brayden Schenn.
It really wouldn't.
I, I, I also could see maybe Logan Stanley going to Detroit, you know?
Maybe you bring, maybe you bring Stanley in, bolster the defensive units, and just see where things go.
I mean, this is a team that I wasn't ex I, I knew they were gonna do good.
I didn't expect they'd do this good, and we'll, we'll kind of put that to the test tonight as they play Washington, who has had some ups and downs as of late.
I, I really am intrigued to see what Detroit does tonight against Washington.
That will be kind of a litmus test for me.
You know, Washington has a lot of offensive talent, Ethan Frank, just n- numerous, numerous players, Ethan Frank, Justin Sortef, et cetera.
So kind of circling back on Detroit, circling back on Detroit, bring in Schenn and see where the playoffs go.
