When the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams clash for their week one division showdown, they'll be doing so under, unprecedented circumstances.
The NFC West rivals are traveling roughly eight thousand miles across the Pacific Ocean to open their twenty twenty-six regular season at the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia.
Scheduled for a Friday, September eleventh kickoff at ten thirty-five AM local time, airing live in the US on Thursday, September tenth at five thirty-five PM Pacific Time.
The historic matchup presents the question of how to handle a seventeen-hour time difference and a marathon flight without sapping performance.
The two franchises have taken fundamentally opposite approaches to solving this equation.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan and the forty-niners science department elected to p- depart for Australia a week ahead of kickoff.
The goal is to allow players' circadian rhythm to fully adjust to the massive time disruptor prior to the game.
Shanahan said, "I would love to just show up the day before the game and play, but I'm not the best when it comes to the science and everything on that stuff.
So you ask the people who've done it a number of times, you ask the people who've studied it, you take all their opinions.
We've been strongly recommended to, when you've got a nineteen-hour flight, and it's sixteen hours something time difference, it's a big adjustment on the body.
So the recommendation for everybody has been to tell us to-- when to go, and it's made a lot of sense, and I know how our players feel also.
I'm just hoping our team is healthy enough and has the time to get there.
Those are the challenges of it, just to get there to prepare for it.
But once you do get there, we're going to have fun playing in another country, and it's going to be a cool atmosphere.
Right now, I'm just thinking of the challenges of getting our team ready for those three and a half hours."
On the opposite sideline, head coach Sean McVay and Los Angeles are relying on a routine that brought them past success during international games.
Rather than spend a full week abroad, the Rams plan to minimize their time down under.
Arriving as late as possible before game day, Los Angeles uses a similar in and out strategy during a previous trip to London, where they beat the Jacksonville Jaguars thirty-five to seven.
The rationale behind the short stay is to keep players on a tight body clock window, avoiding the midweek fatigue slump that often hits travelers several days into s-severe jet lag.
The contrasting methods set up a fran tra-- a fantastic and fascinating sub-narrative for week one
