Former Penguins Forward Is One Of The NHL's Best Free Agents Left

This former Penguins forward is still unsigned at this point in the summer.

Video Transcript

His numbers in the regular season weren't, like, incredible.

He was 19, 12, and 8.

That's pretty good.

You know, 888 save percentage.

Save percentages have kind of been going down.

But Devin, as our resident goaltender, what do you think of this deal and Artis Shelovs?

Like, is he a guy that the Penguins can count on for 40, 50 starts this year?

Do you go battery in this case?

I think they're hoping so.

You know, and they certainly got the right, the right price for him.

I think he's, this is one where he's kind of betting on himself.

But as far as that, that dollar amount goes and what he showed, especially in the playoffs, I know it was a little short stint there, but he played extremely well.

And, and, I've liked him.

He was, he was good in Vancouver.

I liked, I liked him going to Pittsburgh.

You know, he needs to find a little bit of consistency and obviously that, that comes as you grow and it comes as you play.

And, and if he's going to be handed the keys here, then he'll have that opportunity to, to get that experience and, and figure out how to be consistent.

And, and, if he can, you know, get anywhere near to a, to a solid starting goaltender that puts Pittsburgh in a really good spot at $2.8 million.

And obviously for him, you know, he's, he's betting on himself that he can go have one year.

You know, he doesn't, obviously the money wasn't there for him to lock into, to anything much longer.

But he goes and has, has himself a good year and now he has this opportunity as well to go be a starting goaltender.

If you go be a starting goaltender for Pittsburgh, you have a good year, you know, make the playoffs, whatever that is as the guy while he's teeing himself up for something nice come next summer.
