All right, this is 49ers Talk, brought to you by Big O Tires.

I am Matt, she's Jennifer.

And Jennifer, I mean, nothing says football season like having each one of your ears, uh- kind of, banged on by goalposts, which it looks like- Yep that's happening there.

It is.

I'm here at Vanderbilt Stadium.

it's the brand-new stadium.

I'll step aside so you can take a look if you're watching on YouTube.

Yeah.

Oh, you just- It is under construction you just went By the way, Jennifer, you just went from Eddie Pinero right down the goalpost- to Jake Moody, wide left.

Oh, ouch, ouch.

so yes, brand-new Vanderbilt Stadium.

It was under construction last year.

We were on their practice field last year, and now the stadium.

It's gorgeous.

It's brand new.

Tight Ends University has just started.

They had the welcome party last night.

Today I got to have a little sneak peek of George Kittle doing a film review.

So he had They had a big kind of lounge area.

They had a big screen up there.

He posted up some videos, and he was talking about blocking, and about how to go against the 49ers wide nine or anyone else's wide nine defense.

So I already got a peek at George Kittle being a professor in front of this whole group of about 80 to 90 tight ends, and then now they will head out to the field and they'll do some field work after a little lunch break.

We'll, we'll, we'll talk more about that a little bit later, but when you just said that, you know, working on blocking, I did have an opportunity to talk to Joe Graves- Who's the 49ers- Block today new run game coordinator.

He takes over for Brian Fleury, who of course was the tight ends coach as well for the 49ers.

Wow.

So, in talking to Joe Graves, that is definitely a huge emphasis.

Little faster.

And he talked a lot about all 11 guys being part of it.

And, and even Brock Purdy, you know, carrying out the play fakes or just what to do with the football or what to do after, you know, he hands the ball off to Christian McCaffrey or whoever else he might be handing the ball off to.

And so it really feels like this off-season there's been a huge emphasis on, you know, returning to that running game form that the 49ers have shown in the past.

And you know, I, I wouldn't say it all starts with, with George Kittle.

I, I do think it is a, a collective effort, but man, he does play such a huge vital role for the 49ers- Right in trying to get that run game going.

Absolutely.

Absolutely.

And this is actually a very largely dominant 49ers group of guys here for Tight Ends University.

Not only are the tight ends here, but Kyle Juszczyk, honorary tight end, is also here for the first time.

This is the sixth Tight Ends University.

George Kittle is here.

I believe Luke Farrell is here, Jake Tonges, a couple guys from the past.

Charlie Werner is here.

And you got some quarterbacks.

Mac Jones is here, Brandon Allen is here, and Brock Purdy is also gonna be here- Ah to help throw the football to the tight ends that are here.

Oh, is that right?

So it Has Brock been there in the past?

He has not.

This is his first Tight Ends University.

He did buy a house in Nashville, so he is nearby.

So, he's been working out with George Kittle, obviously last off-season at George Kittle's huge facility.

He built a, football field in his kind of backyard.

He's got a weight room and he's got the whole thing.

He loves working out with people.

Everybody that is in the NFL is welcome, and same thing here.

Guys that are, have been tight ends in the past that are maybe alum.

Tony Gonzalez, this is his first Tight Ends University- Ooh so he's in the building.

Of course, Travis Kelce and Greg Olsen, who founded this, workshop for tight ends, they're both here as well.

Well, you know, the, the biggest surprise I think of the whole week is just the fact that, you and I are getting together on a live stream here- because we're what are we s- I guess we're seven hours apart now.

We would've been- Right.

Right nine hours apart.

So I'm, I'm, on a family vacation.

so doing a little podcast here from, from, Milano in, in, Italia.

So, been up to Rome and visited.

went to Cinque Terre a- and visited relatives in, outside of Milan and, and that's where I'm at now.

So, as, as we talked about, you know, th- this is, in the opening we talked about, you know, this is kind of the slow time of the NFL calendar.

There's, there's usually not much stuff going on.

And you know, obviously, unfortunately for the 49ers, and we're still grieving, obviously the, the loss of Aldon Smith.

We talked about that on the, on the last podcast.

And, and, so it, it just, it's still I mean, I think our heart still aches, for, for Aldon, and it just, it, I, I still have a hard time believing it's real.

I mean, I, I know there were a lot of, former 49ers who went to his services over the weekend, but, that's still just kind of a, a shock to the system thinking of, the passing of Aldon Swit- Smith more than a week ago.

All right, we're back on 49ers Talk.

I have a different background.

They started projecting a bunch of sound and noise- and music at the stadium, so we had to take a little intermission.

But just back talking about Aldon Smith a little bit.

yeah, just such a shocking piece of news and, I think it was felt throughout the organization, especially since he spoke to the rookies just last week prior to his- Mm-hmm passing.

I did hear there was a really nice turnout at the services that were open to the public.

but you know, I unfortunately couldn't go.

I had plans already, and I think you were already, out of town.

So, we obviously send our condolences to the family and friends of Aldon Smith.

both of us had a chance to, you know, interact with him while he was a player for the 49ers, and then a little bit afterwards too, and just never easy to wrap your head around, something like that when it happens to someone at such a young age.

Yeah, no, no doubt about it.

Just, just absolutely awful news coming at this time of the year.

And, you know, on this episode of 49ers Talk, I guess we're gonna be talking, you know, some, some nice positive news, with, with, George Kittle and Tight Ends University.

We're gonna be talking about, obviously we just talked about some, some really bad news, with Aldon Smith, and then also some just more bizarre news with, with Brandon Aiyuk.

So, so Jennifer, before we just kinda turn it over to you to, to talk about what's going on there at Tight Ends University and, and who you had an opportunity to catch up with today, I, I do want to address, Brandon Aiyuk.

A- and, you know, he, he post- he's continued to post on social media.

You know, his latest post, he, he just said, you know, "Go Commanders, go Commanders, go Commanders, take command."

And b- boy, I, I just don't think he's helping himself at all.

And, and if you're the Washington Commanders, and, and if you have been considering signing him or trading for him, I, I just wonder if you have to, you know, if you're Adam Peters, if you're Dan Quinn, you, you really have to consider the, the, what you'd be getting into i- if, if you signed him.

So, I You know what?

There, there's been some talk about, you know, looking at him.

Maybe he's just completely out of shape.

I know he also posted on social media stepping on the scales, and he was 209 pounds.

So I, I don't know.

I mean, I, I just don't know how this thing's going to end.

And if you're the 49ers and you hear a player who's under contract to you talking about, "Go Commanders," why would you allow him to just go to the Commanders right away?

So I, I just don't think Brandon Aiyuk i- is helping himself at all toward whatever his next step is professionally or just in life in general.

Yeah.

I, I have heard that the Commanders are interested in signing him, but there is a hard stance that they are not going to trade anything or give anything up for him.

So I think there is a desire to have him, but they are not going to give anything to the 49ers whatsoever for him, and it's, it's a huge risk.

I, I think that would That's smart on their part for not wanting to give anything up.

I mean, if they are able to get him for no cost to them and sign him to a one-year deal, all right, maybe that's something that they can entertain.

But I've heard that there is a definite hard stance on them not trading anything to get Brandon Aiyuk in the building.

I also thought it was interesting- Hey George Kittle was on a podcast recently, and he had some interesting things to say about Brandon Aiyuk, and you kinda can read between the lines.

George Kittle, ever positive, never You know, doesn't- talk anything bad about anyone, but he did kind of say some things that you're like, "Hmm, there's some underlying, underlying message there."

He said six, seven, eight weeks, I think week six, seven, or eight last year, he made it a point to go out onto the practice field to watch Brandon Aiyuk doing his recovery and his rehab, and he said he watched him run.

He ran 22 miles an hour and stopped on a dime.

So as of- week six, seven, or eight last year, he still has it.

Now, no one's knows whether he still has it now.

Wh- which tells you one thing, right?

Right.

Which one, tells you one thing, is that i- if he was able to do that, he was healthy enough to then play football for the second half of the regular season, and that was not even a factor, not even an issue, not even a consideration because he stopped going to Santa Clara.

And so- Mm-hmm you know, I said this on last podcast or one of the, the last podcasts, I don't You know, his post about 49ers are mad at him, I, I, I don't, you know, I, I don't care at all about that because we haven't heard the 49ers Well, we have.

We, we've heard kind of the disappointment.

But I wanna know why Brandon Aiyuk decided to just say, "I don't need 27 million.

I don't, I don't care if I'm fined repeatedly by the 49ers, and I'm giving back..." He gave back millions upon millions upon millions of dollars, so there had to be a reason, I would think, for him to do that.

It had to be a really good reason, a reason that he hasn't even come close to articulating as of this point.

Right.

And George Kittle said another few things, too, and it was with guys, a guy who was a Washington Commander fan, and he's like, "You guys have fun with that, I guess."

He also said- Yeah "You have..." And he said, "You have fun with all that comes with that."

And he said it kind of- Yeah you know, with a smile.

He said it kind of, you know, 'cause George Kittle is a positive guy.

So he didn't say anything necessarily straight-up bad, but implications are that there's a lot that comes with Brandon Aiyuk in the building.

And then finally, he said, you know, you're talking about the millions of dollars that he gave back.

He go- You know, they said, "Oh, well, maybe 'cause it's the California taxes."

They were kinda joking around, and he's like, "We'll pay him less money out here, and he'll be happier."

And George Kittle's final comment was like, "Yeah, I wouldn't be happy either with a team that paid me $130 million."

Well- So, you know, I mean, like- And, and, yeah, I mean, and George is- One who deserves it is George Kittle- Yeah that type of- And, and, and, and George, George never talks bad about anybody.

No.

Yeah.

And, and to hear that, and, and obviously, you know, George knows a lot more than we do as far as just being behind the scenes and seeing how this thing played out.

But the fact of the matter, too, is, you know, the 49ers did not pay him 120 million.

They, they will never pay him 120 million.

In fact, the money that he should have made, the guaranteed money that all he had to do was the absolute minimum, and he still gets all that money.

He doesn't get- Very much of that.

And so it turns out that for the 49ers it was kind of the worst case scenario and the best case scenario.

And the worst case scenario is they got a, a, they stuck their neck out on the line for a player that they signed to a big money contract, and he decided he wasn't, didn't wanna be a part of the organization anymore.

But where it really helped the 49ers is because they had to have felt immediate buyer's remorse.

And Brandon Aiyuk just on a silver platter or, hey, because it's the San Francisco 49ers, it was a gold-plated platter, platter that he just gave them back tons and tons of money that now they can use on other players.

Yeah.

And, and so they have certainly moved on.

You know, they've moved on with Mike Evans, with Dejon Stribling, you know, Ricky Pearsall, Christian Kirk, you know, on and on and on.

Jordan Watkins, DeMarcus Robinson, Jacob Cowling.

So I, I think the players feel like they're in much better shape right now at their wide receiver position than they were a year ago.

So, hey, let's spin it.

Stop talking about wide receivers and let's start talking about tight ends, and we'll do that after this word from our sponsors.

We are back on 49ers Talk, brought to you by your local Toyota dealers.

Toyota, let's go places.

All right, Jennifer, the big news of the day.

You saw something with your own two eyes that not very many people on the, on planet Earth have seen in a long, long time.

Tell me about it.

George Kittle at Tight Ends University.

They were all going through the warmups, and I saw George Kittle running.

Now, not a full-on sprint.

No.

Not a full-on sprint, but running, jogging, doing the warmups, the calisthenics, you know, when they Like how we watch when we open up, you know, training camp and we see them doing the warmups on the field.

George Kittle was partaking in those warmups.

So, he is on track.

I asked him specifically, I'm like, "Hey, we saw you running."

He's like, "Did you see that?"

He's like, "You weren't supposed to see that."

so yes, George Kittle always eternally positive.

huge turnout for Tight Ends University.

90 players, were there.

Wow.

They actually had to turn away some tight ends.

Normally they don't do that.

Are- But they're Yeah.

So- Are these all NFL tight ends?

Yes.

Or, or are there college guys?

All NFL tight ends.

It's all- All NFL tight ends.

Okay.

But there were some NFL alum that wanted to come back that hadn't played in a little while, and they weren't necessarily, They just, 90 guys, it's a lot.

Yeah.

So, um- It, it- They, they kept it to guys who are playing now- Yeah and guys who have, like at least maybe recently not played.

So 90 guys, not just current guys, but a few that had, you know, maybe not played for a year, and it's guys that are connected to clo- closely to George Kittle.

Logan Thomas was there.

He, you know, was a, was with the Niners for one season, doesn't necessarily play now, but because of his relationship with George Kittle and how he's helped kind of coach guys up in their route running and whatnot, that he was there.

Tony Gonzalez had his first appearance- at Tight Ends University.

Mac Jones was there for his second year, and Brock Purdy, first time at Tight Ends University.

But of course, all the other tight ends, you have Luke Farrell, and, Jake Tonges, guys that have been with the 49ers, Charlie Werner.

a, just a lot of familiar faces.

Actually, all the quarterbacks that were there have at some point been on the 49ers.

Nick Mullens- Brandon Allen, Mac Jones, C.J.

Beathard, Brock Purdy.

So it was a host of 49ers current quarterbacks and former quarterbacks.

All right.

And can you tell, like, is You know, George is always upbeat, but, there's gotta be a tremendous sense of pride for him to be able to pull this off.

I, I know he's had a lot of help and, Greg Olsen, Travis Kelce very intimately involved in this as well.

But can you- Yeah kinda tell that George even has maybe more of a bounce in his step, in Nashville this time of year?

Oh, absolutely.

I mean, the fact that he is up and able to do anything out there at all after going through an Achilles injury at the end of the season is pretty remarkable.

So yes, Geo- George was a founder, Travis Kelce, Greg Olsen, those three were the ones that originally put the whole program together.

And this was, you know, at a high school back when it started six years ago.

Mm-hmm.

It has moved to Vanderbilt University.

I think it was, like, 30 or 40 guys to start.

They're up to 90 guys now.

Vanderbilt redid, they built a huge new stadium, so it was all in the stadium.

just really nice facility.

Before it was on their practice field.

So it just- every year gets bigger and bigger and, it's just, it's fun.

They go through, blocking drills on the field.

George's dad, who was an offensive lineman, he helps them out.

Travis Kelce talks about coming out of their breaks at the top of the route.

Greg Olsen talks about route running in general.

George Kittle talks a lot about blocking.

And then one new thing that this year we were able to watch before they went on the field, they have a classroom session, and it's film study.

And I've asked over and over again if I could just be a fly on the wall there, and finally this year they opened it up to media for one segment.

Oh.

And we got to watch George, Professor George Kittle take film clu- cutups and kinda show how tight ends can get an advantage over a defensive end, especially going up in that wide nine, going up against a wide nine defense.

So it's really interesting to be able to hear George talk about, you know, where the first step should be, how he sh- can use one hand versus the other.

just kind of a really nice insight- about how he can take advantage of where he is on the line versus a defensive end.

All right.

So we did see George doing a little bit of running at Tight Ends University.

I did ask him one-on-one what it was like to get moving again and what his timeline is like to be ready for week one.

Here's my interview with George Kittle.

George, how are you today?

I'm wonderful, Jennifer.

How are you?

I'm good.

I saw you running around on the field out there.

How's the Achilles feeling?

What?

You saw that?

Yeah.

I thought I was sneaking around.

Nope.

I'm doing great.

we're on track.

Everything's going good.

No setbacks, so just enjoying it.

Checking boxes one day at a time.

And this has grown so much.

I mean, brand new stadium here at Vanderbilt.

How has this been this year?

Sixth one.

it's the most guys we've ever had.

We've over 90 guys are here, so a lot of people.

We have, coaches this year, so, like, Robert Tonyan's a team captain.

Eric Saubert's a team captain.

So we broke that up, giving responsibilities out.

You know, just always trying to grow the position so, you know, at some point other guys can be leading the Tight End University.

And Kyle Juszczyk, you said about time after six years it took you to get him here.

Hey, I just had seen, you know, the trend is that while there's not a lot of fullback positions, a lot of tight ends are playing fullback.

So why not have the best fullback of all time, 10-time Pro Bowler Kyle Juszczyk, come and learn these guys a thing or two?

I mean, when you were out last year, he did take on a little bit of your responsibility out there, right?

He does.

I mean, he's The fun thing about Juice is he's been coming to our tight end meeting rooms now for the last year and a half.

And while it's fun watching him learn from us, hearing how he talks about the offense from his point of view is really cool because I've never had a tight ends coach that can also coach the fullback position.

So having someone in there who knows all the details and what, like, Bobby Turner's coaching and what Kyle really wants is very eye-opening, especially for guys like Jake Conger, Brandon- Brayden Willis.

Like, they get to see it from his point of view.

All right.

What's your opinion on, I know it's a bit early, but Khalil Dinkins, the new guy in your room?

Oh, first off, fits in the room really well.

He loves, he loves Marvel and Star Wars, so instantly I'm friends with him, and he loves Legos, so he'll fit in just fine.

you know, just want him to get to training camp healthy, and so he can show, like, how good he is, 'cause he has qualities and characteristics that can be a really good football player.

And that wide receiver room got a huge upgrade this season.

you know what?

I would say, I could be wrong, but I feel like this is one of the most, this is, like, our probably most depth we've had in the wide receiver room, like, one of the most competitive wide receiver rooms we've had.

So I'm just looking forward to seeing all of the competition.

I know Mike Evans is amazing, and, it's just, it's really fun to see how he works and how guys follow his work ethic.

All right.

George, have a great time today.

Thank you.

See, last year was the first time we asked him, and I'm ashamed it was Travis's idea to invite Juice.

but Juice didn't want to come because I didn't invite him, so he's quite hard to get.

but this year I asked him probably during the season last year.

I said, "Hey, I need you," and he's been really excited about it.

You know, we're going through the film together, what plays I like, what plays he likes.

It's been, really fun to have him here.

Just, like I said, his perspective is just so unique.

And I guess he's the best in the world that's ever done it, so it's good to hear it.

You know, it's year 10 for both of you with the 49ers, so- Pretty cool pretty cool way to, to, to celebrate that.

But when you look back, meeting Juice the first time, do you remember the first time that you met him in the building in 2017?

Yeah, we weren't really good friends until, like, 2018.

Took a while.

I had to, like, earn his respect, which I respect from Juice.

But, he's been awesome the entire time.

Honestly, my earliest memory of him is him telling me that I was doing a workout wrong in the weight room.

I'll never forget it.

Thanks, Juice.

And I wasn't doing it wrong.

You Harvard guys are just so despicable sometimes.

But, he's been awesome.

And the cool thing is, too, he's only just gotten better the longer I've been around him, so that's pretty interesting.

Brock is here.

Yes.

How much did it take to, to get Brock to get out to Tight End U?

I had to threaten to beat him up.

But he's here.

Mac Jones is here.

We have all former Niners quarterbacks here today.

Yes.

And it's a I mean, what a great group.

They're having a fantastic time.

Mac Jones is definitely leading the vibes.

but, Brandon Allen, Nick Mullens are, they're striving for second place there.

And finally, how are you feeling, and are you on track for, for week one still?

Definitely on track.

I have a chance.

Like, nothing's 100% certain, but I haven't taken a step back.

Nothing bad's happened, knock on so much wood.

But, we're slowly getting better, and that, that's all I can ask for.

We're pushing as hard as I can, just without being an idiot.

All right.

Not only did we see George Kittle running on the field, Kyle Juszczyk also got to see George running, and he had a lot of things to say about his, I think, best friend on the team.

They have been together for 10 years.

It's not often that NFL teammates get to spend 10 years with each other, but George Kittle and Kyle Juszczyk have.

Here's my interview with Kyle Juszczyk.

The sixth Tight Ends University, you are finally here.

George just told us that it was actually Travis's idea to get you here.

Wow, George actually admitted that?

I'm surprised.

that is the truth.

You would think my best friend and teammate of 10 years would, extended the invite.

But the way it was presented to me, George and I were stretching before practice and, George goes, "Hey, Juice- Yes Travis would love if you would come to Tight End U and teach a fullback class."

So that's great.

Thanks.

I'm happy that Travis said it.

But, yeah, so I'm happy he fessed up to it.

All right.

And then you taught a little bit of fullback lessons.

What did you impart?

Because George was saying that it was very insightful.

Yeah, there's, there's so much crossover now between what I do and what these tight ends are asked to do.

And, so many guys that are, if they're not a true Y tight end with their f- their hand in the ground next to the offensive tackle, they get asked to be in the backfield here and there.

And so I just, I, I wanted to help them not feel like such a fish out of water.

I want it to feel a little more natural.

So I was just, I was talking about alignments.

I was talking about using your eyes to manipulate the defense, which I feel like is truly one of my superpowers as a football player is, has been able to manipulate linebackers with h- which direction I look on, on plays and stuff.

So I was just trying to impart some of those little tricks with them.

So just little things pre-snap can kind of push a linebacker one way or the other?

Absolutely.

pre-snap and post-snap, just kind of where your eyes are at.

And I also talked about, what we say about getting your butt out of the hole.

And so when a linebacker's feeling, when a safety is feeling, and you got the running back right behind you, so many guys- Can kind of get stalemated or knocked back, but there's, there's a technique to it of kind of attacking their outside leverage, and in doing so it gets your butt out of the hole and it just creates a, a wider hole.

Now, you kind of filled in in some tight end roles last year- Yeah while George was out.

What kind of, like what kind of jobs did you have when you're on the field to take that tight end position?

I, I feel like I get asked to do kind of everything, it just depends who's down that week.

but like now I, I gen- I meet with the tight ends, so I, I know everything that they're being told to do.

and we genuinely, like sometimes we do the exact same stuff, it's just whether it's 21 personnel or 12 personnel.

So it's pretty natural for me to fill in in those situations.

Right.

We saw George running around a little bit today.

Yeah.

How exciting is that to see what he's doing?

It's, it's so cool.

I'm so proud of his work ethic and his commitment.

To come back from such a gruesome injury like that, he has not let up one bit since the injury, and he's been so positive about the whole thing.

it literally from minutes after it happened, like the positivity from this guy is just so infectious, and he's just constantly, it's always on his mind about how he can get better.

You know, it doesn't matter what we're doing, he finds a time to rehab and get a little bit better each day.

And it seems like that's a special part of your locker room.

I mean, Fred Warner didn't have the towel over his head.

I mean, that was a gruesome injury as well.

Like- Yeah he's positive on the, on the cart as he's going out.

I think, this is just my o- opinion, I, I think that positivity genuinely, like your, it will change your brain chemistry and can help you heal faster.

And I do feel like that has helped guys like Fred, like George, like Brock.

The guys that are super positive are able to bounce back quicker from injuries.

All right.

The wide receiver room.

George talked about it being one of the biggest improvements from last year.

Yeah.

What have you seen from that group so far?

Man, I, I've seen such a shift.

It's been so awesome to see Mike Evans in person and to be in a Niners jersey.

He has been so dominant and, and something that I don't think we've had in maybe ever, and not in a long time.

his ability to be a true X receiver, running individual routes by himself and win against man-to-man coverage I think is gonna open up so much for this offense.

And an offense that's already had a lot of success without it.

So I think we get healthy, the addition of Mike with Stribling, Christian Kirk, Kalen Ballage, I think there's a lot of explosive, reliable players that they, they're just gonna take this offense to another level.

And again, it seems like you can already see it even though it's not real football yet.

Right.

Of course.

everybody can look, you know, a lot of people can look good in, in shorts and a T-shirt, but I think that is kind of, that's been an MO for the Niners is we, we s- excel at being a physical team.

So that part I'm not, I'm not too worried about.

it, it's just about us staying healthy and continuing to do what we've done for years.

Right.

10-year anniversary for you and George.

Yep.

I mean, it's pretty remarkable that you have a teammate for that long.

That doesn't happen in the NFL very often.

It doesn't happen at any level.

George is the, the longest tenured teammate I've had in my entire life.

going back to pee wees, high school, college, you just don't play with people for 10 years.

so it's just, it's really special that him and I have been able to do that at such a great place like San Francisco.

you know, I, I can't say how much I, I, I love the place, and to be able to do that with George and for, our families to have the relationships they do, for Kristen and Claire to be best friends and to, you know, have their own YouTube channel together, it, it really is so, so special.

So I'm, I'm so grateful for it.

I mean, and just one final note, I mean, Kristen and Claire, I mean, going through the IVF journey.

Right.

I mean- Right.

It's so special for them to have one another and be able to go through stuff like that and, and to feel, that comfort and that friendship from one another.

I, I am so thankful for Claire, and I know, Kristen is as well, and, and, and vice versa.

So just, just so thankful for that friendship.

Right.

Yeah.

And have a re- great rest of the time here.
