Grading the 49ers 2nd Round Draft Pick WR De’Zhaun Stribling

Grant Cohn grades the San Francisco 49ers second round draft pick De'Zhaun Stribling.

Video Transcript

The 49ers just pulled off the reach of all reaches.

They took Ole Miss wide receiver Dejoun Stribling with the 33rd pick.

This guy was projected to get taken in round 3 at the earliest.

Most people had him getting taken in round 4.

And the 49ers took him at the beginning of round 2 after trading down twice.

They could have traded down 3 more times and still had Dejoun Stribling.

You were hoping that maybe the 49ers would take the best player available for the first time ever, but these are the 49ers.

This is Kyle Shanahan.

He fell in love with one wide receiver like he does every time, and he's the smartest guy in the world.

So instead of Trading back and getting more where other people might get him, just put your flag in the ground and say that this guy's incredible and give him a million targets, so he's your pick, but the thing is, is he really gonna play?

Where is he gonna get on the field?

He's supposed to be a good blocker.

He's very fast, he's big.

Is he the number 3 receiver on this team?

No.

The number 3 receiver is Christian Kirk, the number 1 receivers Pearsall or, or Mike Evans.

This guy's number 4 on the depth chart.

He's not returning punts.

He probably won't play because he probably won't learn the offense until 2029.

Um, when he can recite the entire playbook forward and backward in 30 seconds he'll be able to play, but this just seems like such a classic reach for the 49ers, uh, and it's just full of hubris.

You know, the other pick that had a lot of hubris was Ty Simpson to the Rams at 13.

That's a quarterback.

This is a reach, a bigger reach.

This is a worse pick than Ty Simpson.

I hate to be negative.

I like what the 49ers were doing.

They lost me on this one.

I give this pick a D.
