J.J. McCarthy's NFL Future: Backup Role & Trade Speculation
J.J. McCarthy's status as Minnesota's backup quarterback is up in the air amid trade buzz, while Carson Wentz ramps up the pressure and could win the job.

How do you think J.J. McCarthy's feeling right now, Jacob?
As he is likely losing the backup role to Carson Wentz.
Now, to give Carson Wentz credit- Yeah he knows the, he knows the offense, he's been there.
He, you know, with He, he knows what's going on.
But he has outplayed J.J. McCarthy.
Now remind us, 10th overall pick just a few years ago.
He likely may not be wearing a Minnesota uniform here, despite the fact that Kyler Murray can't see over the offensive line according to his coach.
But what, what do you do if you're Minnesota?
Are you trying to find a trade partner?
'Cause he's not well-liked in the locker room either.
Yeah, I think this, Joe, reminds me a lot of the Anthony Richardson situation with the Colts.
You know- we went into last off-season and we thought, hey, Anthony Richardson's gonna beat Daniel Jones, and then if he- Yeah struggles as a starter, Jones is gonna come in and replace him, and that'll be the end of that.
But then once Jones won the thing, Richardson ended up in this weird spot where it was like, oh, they've kind of given up on him, but they're not fully giving up on him.
They still hung onto him.
He requested a trade this off-season, he's still there.
I think McCarthy could find himself in kind of a similar situation where, you know, the Vikings are gonna wanna If they wanna get rid of him, they're gonna wanna get something for him.
But what is his trade value?
It's gonna be pretty close to nonexistent.
Teams aren't gonna be looking at McCarthy and saying, "Hey, this is a guy that maybe could be a franchise quarterback."
He's a reclamation project at this point, and teams just aren't gonna be willing to give up much for that.
So I think in a weird way- Minnesota's probably gonna be stuck with J.J. McCarthy there.
They may just keep him this season, try to develop him behind Kyler, see if he can make some strides.
I mean, there was a time late in last season where it looked like he was taking some steps forward, but it wasn't really gonna be enough to make him, like, a surefire starter, so.
Wow.
I think it's a tough situation for him.
He's just gonna have to abide by what Minnesota wants to do.
And if he ends up as the third-string quarterback, he's probably- just gonna have to work, work his tail off behind the scenes and prove that he belongs in the NFL.
But it's a really tough situation for him, and I don't think Minnesota's just gonna let him shake loose, you know?
No, I don't think, I don't think so either.
But again, Sunday brings some interesting moves in the NFL.
It's, cutdown day.
Maybe McCarthy, who knows, is headed somewhere else on Sunday.
I wouldn't be shocked by that, by the way
