Justin Fried and Mike Luciano discuss the New York Jets' offensive line as well as Brendan Sorsby, while Levi Dombro talks about Geno Smith.

Video Transcript

Hello, welcome back to the Jet Press podcast.

My name is Justin Fried, and I'm joined as always by my good friend Mike Luciano.

Mike, we are officially in the dog days of the NFL summer.

There's not a lot going on, so we appreciate everybody tuning in and still getting your, your fix of Jets content ahead of a big game for the Knicks tonight.

We don't got to talk basketball, Mike Mike, I'm sorry, but You know, let's go next, uh, but how are you feeling, buddy?

How are you doing?

What's going on?

Well, I'm feeling pretty good.

I'm happy we've got a good series, so every game has been close, so, yeah, I, uh, I went to a watch party at Bryant on Monday, uh, at Bryant Park, and, uh.

Man, that shit sucked.

Like I what I, what I was getting irritated with, not like a lot of people who aren't Knicks fans, yeah, I myself am am one of them, but like, either claiming to be Knicks fans and then doing things for attention, or like, I'm right overplaying it in a phony way to get attention.

I have no issue with if you are from New York City or even from.

In the surrounding areas, right, of New York City, and you want to claim the Knicks, uh, you know, hop on the bandwagon right now.

I got no issue with that, cause the Knicks are, are just as much for the city of New York as much as they are for Knicks fans.

Like I feel like they are the team that represents New York.

So if you wanna hop on and you're from the city, I don't, I don't blame you for hopping on the bandwagon.

If you are from outside the area, and you are a kick streamer, or you are a celebrity, you are Drewski, you are whoever, and.

You are coming into the city and you are there just to create chaos and just, you know, start fights and to tear down street signs because you're gonna treat the city that you don't live in like a personal playpen.

That's when I got an issue.

Or even not, even if you're just like larping as this as this Knicks fan who's been watching Mario Hazona or whatever, if you're not that like Roddy Turoff and Damian Dodson and.

Don't go band for band with me on, on basketball players from my team.

I could, you know, you, you'll be pulling out who's, who's an Josh Boone and Terrence Williams, who had that whole, remember that whole insurance fraud thing.

He was the ringleader of that.

Did Reggie Evans ever play for the Nets?

Oh yeah, he was great with the Nets.

He had like 13 rebounds a game when Quincy AC.

That's a Nets and Knicks legend.

Yeah, he was terrible.

You know, who isn't terrible is Austrian Jets fan.

Oh funny.

Memberships, thank you as always, Austrian jetsman.

I'm gonna take that as a good omen for the Knicks tonight, OK. And also, oh, I should know this ahead of time.

Mike, is, is Austria in the World Cup?

Did they make the World Cup this year?

I, I don't wanna, I think they did.

OK, hold on, I wanna see, I wanna see, cause if they didn't, now I'm no, they did, they did, they did.

OK, great.

Well, I hope we didn't, which I hope this is a good omen for I don't know how Italy didn't, but whatever.

When's their first match, Austria?

They play, I'm not sure they played Jordan a week from today.

They're gonna whoop Jordan's ass, bro.

Like they, they will beat Jordan.

They.

Do you have any, uh, I don't know, Jordanese, uh, people in Chad Jordanian, I think Jordanian.

I don't know.

Jordan is Austria is significantly better at soccer than than Austria than uh than Jordan to a week from now it's 5-1.

That would be so embarrassing.

No, they're gonna, they're gonna win.

We got it, uh, and what's your, your Austrian fun fact today?

Let me, let me pull it up, um.

Here's a good one.

So you know the song Vienna by Billy Joel, right, Mike?

Yeah, I haven't said.

Is it about Vienna?

Well, it is, it is actually fun fact.

Billy Joel named the song Vienna after a visit to Austria, apparently according to, I didn't write the source on this cause I got this a few weeks ago, but according to me right now, Joel saw an elderly woman sweeping the street and realized that life doesn't end.

At 30.

This actually sounds like AI, but just bear with me.

The city, the city's slower pace and sense of purpose at every age inspired the song's message.

Slow down, Vienna waits for you.

Another fun fact is my, uh, two friends just had a baby, and they were gonna name their kid uh Vienna, and they're named in Austria.

Oh, that's a weird, they're gonna name their kid Vienna, and I was like that's a terrible idea, and they did not name their kid Vienna.

Austria is a terrible.

Name for a baby boy or it would, it would, but there it was a baby girl.

They ended up going with Violet, and she's adorable, but they, they were set on V, huh?

They were, they were set on V, and I'm glad Veronica or Valerie, they kept picking and then they considered Valerie because of the, the song, but there was like some sort of familial, familial relation with that where they're like they knew somebody that they didn't wanna, you know, let's let's get into jets.

You can find us on Apple, Google, Spotify, Overcast, wherever we get.

The podcast we are there and on YouTube, like the stream, big help subscribing, big help.

I'll push up the algorithm and TikTok, which we are growing rapidly over on TikTok.

So that is a way to support this show.

Before we get to the thing that'll get me really mad, uh, we had a couple of pretty fire quotes, just a little asides.

Uh, Braylan Allen's apparently playing a 250, which dude.

I try so hard cause every summer we do this where it's like the Braylin the Braylan Allen hype train is, is off the rails, and I know you are a big Braylan Allen guy still.

I'm, I'm can you not be when he's this big?

I'm trying really hard not to get, you know, caught up in the, uh, the whirlwind of hype here, but the man is saying he's 250 with a lower body fat percentage than he's ever had .

I mean.

God damn, dude, he's, he's a freight train.

He's a tank engine.

It's wild.

And I don't know if there's much for discussion here, but I do need to bring up a quote from, uh, Carl Dunbar, the Jets' defensive line coach.

This was, if you hadn't heard this, this is when asked about DeAndre Sweat, quote, I remember my coach telling me back in the day, big men are like big women.

There's not a lot of them, and everybody wants them.

What's your analysis of that, Mr.?

Oh, I love this guy.

And he's, and he's like the best defensive line coach in the AFC.

So I know I said this before the show, every coaching staff needs an assistant coach with Carl Dunbar vibes.

You liken them to Ron Middleton, and I was like, yeah, he's, he's just Ron Middleton but better at his job, so significantly better.

There's, there's your new age of Ron Middleton.

I'm excited later on the show before we get to the , the Brendan Sorsby stuff, which we'll talk about in a moment.

We'll be joined at around 3:30 by Levi Dombro of Just Blog Baby, our Raiders sister site, and we're gonna talk to Geno Smith, and this is a.

The guy who watched every snap that Geno Smith played last year and we're gonna, you know, get the, get the scoop from him, and I don't think it'll be very positive based off, uh, how washed is Geno.

We're also gonna talk some Dylan Parham, of course, because Parham came over from the Raiders, but, uh, until then, Mosa too, yeah, Mendoza, sure.

Until then, you wanna talk some Brendan Soarsby because what a wild situation, man.

Very rarely am I, you always hear, oh, this is unbelievable, or like shocking, like I , I'm goddamn shocked.

By what happened with the Brendan Soresby thing.

Why are we talking about on the Jet press?

Well, because he got dealt, instead of being banned for life or banned for the year, which typically is the thing for gambling, especially betting on your own team.

And betting the under on his own team, so he's not just supporting the boys, he's betting the under on his own team.

Over 40 times he bet on his own team, thousands of bets in general, like what was it, $200,000 in bets.

I don't unbelieve he was betting on Romanian soccer, like, and and he was losing most of them because you lose most of your bets.

That's no matter who you are, and the Nathan's hot dog eating contest.

So instead of being banned for life or a year, keep in mind, Justin, how many books and stuff you read about dirty college athletics and there's games that got fixed for 100 of this in terms of volume.

He gets 2 games and neither of them, neither of them are conference.

He'll be back for the conference opener in week 3.

What a missing Abilene Christian and Oregon State.

Oregon State, it was horrific last year.

It was horrible last year, who had 3 head coaches last year because they fired an interim coach, which I've never seen.

And then, and then when they have to play Houston, by the way, he's back cause a retired Lubbock County judge whose kids went to Texas Tech Law School, said, I don't know.

The, the, my favorite part of that was he's gonna suffer irreparable injury by not having the camaraderie of Texas Tech.

You know what, Justin, we have a male skewing audience.

I checked.

You know what, if your girlfriend goes, where were you last night?

And you go, if you keep asking me this, I'm gonna suffer permanent irreparable injury.

That apparently that works legally it works.

You can just, you can just do that now.

Sounds like it's a threat.

You can just get out of jail free card, literally get out of jail free card.

Apparently now, why are we talking about this for the Jets?

Because as part of this deal, which deal means do whatever the lawyer said, cause that's what the lawyer asked for, the prosecution got nothing.

Sosby will be ineligible to go into the supplemental draft this year.

So if Jets fans who were debating, oh, should he's a 2nd, or 3rd or 4th on Brendon So, well, now you can't use anything, doesn't matter.

And how are we gonna, how are we gonna spin this forward?

That's what we like doing is spinning news forward.

I think unless he just goes insanely bonkers and has this insane great college season, and even then, I don't know about it, completely off the board.

Because 1, how do I know he's not gonna do this again, honestly, and #2.

Part of what made what the Nets are trying to do, what the Knicks did do is not just like get better players, but.

They turned down just the noise, the loud noise, like both of those teams and the Jets, especially now are like funny, loud, bad.

It's one thing to be bad and be anonymous like the Jets were last year, but funny, loud, bad, I don't wanna go back to those times.

That's like Robert Salah times.

The Jets is a loud, unnecessary move.

And unless Soresby says, look, I have such a great arm and I'm such a unique prospect.

And I 100% have learned my lesson, which I still don't even really believe because I don't think he fixed this in like a month and a half or two months of rehab .

This is a very serious problem.

Vrabel fix this stuff in like a week, right?

Oh yeah, well, we have day 3.

That's all.

He was.

He was back by day 3, so he missed the boring day, yeah.

So unless that happens, I just don't, I don't want this guy near the Jets.

I think it's just creating an unnecessary problem and drama where none would exist, so.

Get rid of those Sorsby AI Photoshops and Jets helmets, cause I don't think they're happening.

Yeah, it, it would definitely, I think, take an extremely great season from Soarsby to, uh, for him to be, uh, I, I don't know, I'm actually, I'm very curious to see how NFL teams evaluate this situation, because obviously we don't know Brendan Sosby personally, and I imagine most of these teams have not had the opportunity to speak with him one on one yet.

So I don't know if there's any player in this draft class, especially any quarterback in this class, who the pre-draft interviews will be more.

Important for now this might not, it might not even matter.

Like if Sosby has a bad year, you know, he could, oh, he's, oh, he's done.

Well, he could be undrafted, right?

I mean this time last year, Kate Klubnick was a guy that was considered a 1st round pick.

He ended up going in the 4th round.

He has a club that year, nobody's touching him, right?

And that was a surprise that Clubnick went as high as the 4th round.

Like, it's totally possible that Sosby just completely flames out.

He's not an NFL draft prospect by, you know, April next year, but If he does have a really good season, and, you know, maybe Texas Tech leads Texas Tech back to the the the college football playoffs, and, you know, they win 11 games, 12 games, whatever it is, then I, I think he's gonna, he's gonna be on the NFL radar.

Like I don't think this is taking him completely off boards if he plays well enough, as we've seen in the NFL time and time again, talent is going to supersede everything.

There's a reason Deshaun Watson is still on an NFL roster, although that might be more so because of the contract, but.

We see it all the time, right?

Teams will give guys the benefit of the doubt.

They will give them 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th chances as long as you can play football, and that's not necessarily right, but that's how it is.

So, yeah, I, I'm interested to see how the NFL handles it.

Uh, I do think the gambling stuff is a little different than like some of the other crimes.

Obviously we don't have to argue morality on this podcast, but, uh.

Yeah, I'm not sure.

Obviously for for an NFL team, you're more concerned about repeat offenses, and you're also concerned about what NFL punishments might be, uh.

I don't know, man.

I, I would be surprised if he ends up high on the Jets board, even if he has a really good year, cause like you mentioned, they have tried to.

Block out that noise and move past the Aaron Rodgers era and all of that stuff, and I think Aaron Glenn for the most part has done a pretty good job of that the last two years.

Now there's no guarantee that Aaron Glenn is even the head coach in 2027, and there's no guarantee Darren Bougie is even the GM, so it's impossible to say now, but I'm very curious to see how the NFL handles it.

Either way, dude, just from a macro perspective, what even is the NCAA?

How do you enforce anything if you can't enforce this?

What?

Going back to the, the day organized sports.

For a thing.

This was like the number one thing you can't do is fix games and bet on it.

They got this figured out in 1919 with the Black Sox scandal.

They got this figured out.

Now we can't figure it out.

All they should have done, Justin, is just keep refiling and then eventually through probability, you'll find a judge who agrees with you.

If you have enough money, you can just do that.

We have now set the precedent that placing over 40 bets on your own team is, is OK, and you will face minimal repercussions.

I'm not sure.

Sure how you go back from that if you're the NCAA.

And again, it's not even like, this is the one situation where I'm like , it's not actually their fault.

They made the ruling.

They got overruled by a judge.

But the question now is, what power does the NCAA even have as the governing body of sports?

They're not.

They're merely just making suggestions that a judge then overrules them on.

Like that's, that's their power.

And it's a retired judge, a retired judge.

There's no like, oh, he's, he can face scrutiny later for this.

He just came in, did this, and dipped.

A retired judge that has apparent ties to Texas Tech.

I know, I know, I don't know the the full specifics.

I know there was a previous judge on the case that took himself out of the situation because he was, I believe, a Texas Tech alum.

I don't believe this is what you should do.

I believe this judge was an alum of Houston, of Houston, but you're saying he has ties to Texas Tech.

I don't know anything about that.

But either way, I believe I remember seeing that his kids went to Texas Tech Law School, and you know what, he's a Lubbock County judge.

Why is he allowed to do that?

What, what economic engine makes more money for Lubbock, Texas than Texas Tech football?

Nothing.

You've ever been to Lubbock's in the middle of nowhere.

You combine this with the, the Trinidad Chameless situation, which I feel like people just kind of moved on from because everyone was caught up in the NFL draft, but that was crazy that he, how many, it's the same thing, just different, you know, he just kept filing, kept filing until they eventually, you know, granted him eligibility.

Now he's playing with his 7th year or whatever, uh, between that, between.

I mean, you look at the college basketball side of things, where there's dudes who have literally played in NBA games, have been drafted by NBA teams who have been traded.

RJ Lewis was traded.

He's gonna be playing in college this year.

Dude was playing in the G-League, was playing in the summer league, he was traded by the Celtics.

Amari Bailey has like 15 NBA games under his belt.

He's like, I'm gonna go check if I can go back.

It's like, what?

You were, you played for the Hornets.

The, the Jets had traded.

Or the Jets.

The Knicks had traded for a guy named James Naji, I believe, from the Hornets, and he was like on their summer league roster and there was talks, maybe he could even join the join the team.

They have his rights.

Now he's going back to college and he played, I believe, some, some games at Baylor this year.

It's just insane.

Like, what power does the NCAA even have?

I'm not sure where.

We're not a college sports podcast, but where does college sports go?

I mean, this isn't it, like , my brother is not a college football fan.

Fan, but he, he could not understand the concept of this, that Sos we got nothing because now that this precedent has been set, right, first of all, there's two precedents that have been set.

One, possibly more concerningly, the NCAA has no power.

The NCAA can say whatever they want.

They can make whatever rulings they want.

The court rulings have no powers.

You can just go, Well, that one doesn't count.

I'm gonna go to this one counts now.

Like you can just overrule it.

The, the like biggest number one.

obvious no no, like biggest rule that you cannot do, biggest thing you cannot do in in college sports or in any sports is gamble on your own team.

Ruins the integrity and don't, don't you dare go like, oh, this is sponsored by DraftKings.

Yeah, marketing to me and Justin, trying to get us to gamble is not the same as getting Brendan Soarsby a participant in the games to gamble.

Use your, use your noodle here, people, if that is allowed with with minimal repercussions.

What, what else can be allowed, right?

And so what if he, God forbid, what if the Jets took Brendan Soresby and then he came in and he did shit like this again?

Well, I don't, I mean, the NFL, I'm assuming, I mean, at this stage right now, the NFL, I don't know how this all works legally, but Calvin Ridley got a year for betting on other teams.

It seems like the NFL has a lot more power governing authority in situations like this.

Like, I don't think that.

This, I mean, who knows?

I don't know how this is gonna go in the future, but it seems like the NFL has a lot more governing power than the NCAA, which is just completely the wildlife.

I think we do too.

We, we have the same amount of legal authority as the, we might NCAA here.

We very well might.

It's, it's a wild situation, dude.

I don't know.

I, I, I agree that I, I think it's unlikely that So Soy could be a Jet, and it does also, and it's interesting.

Because say Soarsby has a really good year.

Say Dante Moore has a really good year.

Now you're gonna go in the next year's draft class.

Like what if Soarsby and Moore are like two of the top 4 considered, you know, consensus quarterback prospects in the draft.

You have two guys that I think Jets fans don't want nothing to do with as two of the top names.

Well, the Dante Moore is very unfair.

It is a different situation, but I'm saying there's gonna be a lot of Jets fans that would want nothing to do with Dante Moore.

But then we got a couple comments before we move on here.

Uh, the drama is over.

Thank God, says Austrian Jet fan, and Ronald Perry, 279, New York is not the place for him.

It would certainly put more eyeballs on him.

He was struggling in Bloomington, Indiana and Cincinnati and, and Lubbock.

to Cleveland that's a lot less eyes on him than than in New York and keep it simple, by the way, so after seeing the officiating Monday night, not surprised about the source of punishment.

I don't see the correlation, but I'm with you.

The officiating Monday night was because I, I've always said to, like, generally if you're a New York team, especially in the finals, you're not allowed to complain about officiating cause If every team could will it, they want the New York teams to be in the finals every year because I don't even, but that, that, that was an exception.

I also don't really buy that as much.

Like I think it goes, it's a player by player basis.

I just think there are some players that get officiated differently.

I don't think the refs , for the most part, are sitting there being like, oh yeah, we need to be biased towards the New York team.

Like I don't really think that's how it works.

What happened with the Lakers in, in court it's been proven.

It, it, I don't think that's much of a thing in the present day.

Like I, I. I think it's a player by player basis.

Like, some players just get a better whistle than other players.

Like, historically, a guy like Steph Curry has had a bad whistle.

That's just the thing that's happened throughout his career.

I think currently Jalen Brunson has a bad whistle.

I think he used to have a good whistle, and then Brian Windhorse pushed his whole master of the dark arts shit and literally you could draw a line when he said Master of the dark arts.

Brian Windhorst talked about Brunson being the master of the dark art, basically saying he was flopping, and then from the moment that narrative started.

His free throw rate like plummeted, and now he gets a horrific whistle.

He's like not even top 25 in free throw rate or top 30% in free throw in the playoffs.

But we'll get to our, uh, our guest here.

Let's go and just talk briefly about the, uh, offensive line edition, and this would be a good segue actually cause one offensive lineman was a former Raider, of course, exactly the biggest addition of the offseason.

We are, we seldom boast about a Jets unit in as a collective being exceptional in terms of just raw talent because the team has been so bad the last few years.

The offensive line, legitimately is one of the better offensive lines, I think in the AFC.

And I know that there are some fans that would just say oh the O-line can block, like, what happened with Justin Fields last year was such an outlier scenario in terms of how bad a quarterback was harming his offensive line, even Zach Wilson, who was terrible with that.

Didn't hold the ball.

The level of justice.

Zach Wilson just was scared and didn't, couldn't read defenses.

Like there's differences.

Justin Fields just wouldn't, he wouldn't click in his head that if that guy's open, oh, you gotta throw it to him.

It was Look, look, look, run, run, made everybody look bad.

I'm surprised that even with parme has gave him the flexibility.

I would have thought that they.

In the NFL draft would have drafted somebody before they wait until the 6th round and got a Nez Cooper.

Well, I think it's pretty good value there.

I think he's gonna be a nice like road grading, run run blocking 1st guard, if they get him in there.

But overall, like, really the only question I have with this unit is Josh Myers, cause Josh Myers is just a below average starting center, and that's kind of what he's been his whole career with the Packers and everything too.

But as we said last year, if we always said if John Simpson is your worst offensive lineman, that's pretty good.

Well, now if Josh Myers is your worst offensive lineman, that's pretty good, because now you have one below average player, I would say an average with fringes of above average, uh, in Pham.

And then 3 exceptional players, all on rookie contracts in Olu Fashanu, Joe Titman, and Armand Membo.

I think Titman eventually gets extended.

I don't know when, I don't know for how much, but I think, I think they're gonna keep him, even though I'm, I'm, I don't wanna say mixed on Faschenu, I just don't think he's been like stellar, amazing.

I think he's been pretty good.

Given what he's had to work with, and then you got Membu who has Pro Bowl potentially right out of the gate, you could see Pro Bowl potential.

If Armand Membu is a Pro Bowler next year, I don't think anyone's gonna be surprised.

Yeah, he, I think he's the most likely jet to make it if anybody makes it on the offensive line for sure.

I, I think on the offense, period.

I guess Garrett Wilson receivers just a lot of competition there, so you maybe Brees, but again then too, like, yeah, the offense would need to be good enough.

The, the issue with any of the offensive players making it is the offense can't be like twenty-seventh in the NFL cause then none of them are gonna make it, you know.

Yeah, I feel like Membu is gonna have one of those seasons where he'll make like, like Demario Davis had a bunch with the Saints where like he makes all pro, cause the ball watchers are watching him, and he gets them all pro votes, but.

The, the fans are, oh, who's the Jets right tackle, a casual fans not gonna know that, and then he kind of gets overlooked, like that might be in his future.

But that, I say all that to say, the offensive line heading into the year, I know they're probably not gonna have the great injury fortune that they had last year.

Everybody stayed healthy all the way through and it turned out to be for nothing cause they won 3 games.

But I think you should still go into the year very, very confident in this quintet working.

Yeah, I, I think they got better because I think Dylan Parham is, is at least a marginal upgrade over John Simpson, and we'll we'll talk to our guest in a moment, but he, he obviously watched uh both Simpson and, uh, and Parham in, in Vegas, and I also, I, I was covering the Raiders when John Simpson was there, man, and he was brutal.

He was tough.

Obviously, ended up having a resurgence with the Ravens and was very good his first year at the Jets, and took a pretty big step back last year.

Uh, yeah, I mean, just to run down kind of what you just run ran down there, left to right.

I mean, Faschenu.

I, I think the ceiling with him is still a lot higher than what we've seen.

I think Faschenu is a league average starter right now.

I think he's a league average starting left tackle with flashes of being better than that.

Uh, he very much is like a poor man's Debrickashaw Ferguson right now, where it's like the run blocking is getting better, but it's not great .

The pass protection is, is like, he is such a natural athlete and a natural mover that, you know, he's, he's very sad.

in pass protection, even if it's not quite the consistency level that you'd want it to be yet for, for a guy like him, but he's entering good at the stuff he can't teach is the way I would describe it.

Yes, he, he's entering year three.

You're hoping that he takes that leap from average to above average starter this season.

Parham, I mean, 2024 was a very good year for Dylan Parham.

2025, the entire Raiders offensive line took a step back.

The coaching situation was a disaster.

The quarterback was a mess.

We don't have to talk about who that was, but he was bad.

Uh, you know, O'Connell, oh yeah, totally, yeah, yeah, yeah, uh, but, uh, you know, Parham was still pretty good last year, like all things considered, and, you know, 11, stat that I dug up when I was doing some research on Parham for a video I made recently, uh, he's never had more than 5 penalties in a season in his career, which is, that's not nothing.

John Simpson last year had 10 penalties in one year.

Parham has never had that, you know, so hard because year one, he was so much.

Better than he was last year.

Yeah, so, and, and, you know, I, I think Parham will be an upgrade, and I think Parham also gives you that little bit of nastiness that Simpson did as well.

Uh, Myers is definitely a, a, a bad starter, is how I would put it.

If Josh Myers is your 6th best offensive lineman, if he's your 6th offensive lineman, I think that's a, you're in a great spot, which is when they initially initially signed him, that was kind of the expectation.

I think because the O-line stayed healthy around him, he got a little, like, it it it got overshadowed that he was not, he was still not particularly good last year.

If he's your 5th, if he's your 5th best starting offensive lineman, you could survive that.

I think it's gonna prevent you from being like a top end unit, but he's OK. Josh Myers is, is fine, like he's capable enough that he could play, he's an NFL caliber center.

Uh, you know, right guard Joe Titman, I, I don't buy the whole he was significantly better at right guard than center, but I do think that's clearly where the Jets want to keep him long term, and I expect that long-term extension to come before training camp.

I, I think they will get that done at some point within the next month or so.

My guess is anywhere like 3 or 4 years, probably 16-ish million seems reasonable for for.

Joe Titman, uh, another guy where the arrow is pointing up where he's just kind of getting better each year.

I would say he's probably your 2nd best offensive lineman right now behind Membu, uh, probably a tick above average is where I would put Joe Titman, maybe like the 13th, 14th best right guard in the NFL with, again, room to continue getting better cause he's still young .

Uh, and then there's Membu, who is, you know, he came into the NFL and Look, I know there were high, high expectations for a guy who was the 7th overall pick.

I don't think anybody expected him to be as good as he was last year.

He was probably be all the offensive linemen that got Campbell was good before he got hurt, and then afterwards he kind of became a meme, but like Kelvin Banks was awesome.

Banks was awesome.

Josh Simmons, when he played was good .

Membo, like good year for the tackles.

It was, and it's good that the Jets did that then because this year.

Not as good of a year for the tackles.

I mean, it depends on what you thought of guys like, uh, you know, Fano and, and Maui Noah, who I believe is playing guard for the Giants.

He's playing guard.

Fano's playing left tackle too.

They moved him to right, Caleb Lomu, who's, he's playing guard for the Patriots too, right?

No, I think he, I think he's just like a right tackle.

He's just a backup tackle right now.

So Moses at right tackle, yeah, because he, he needs a little more.

Development.

So I think they were like kind of put him on ice for a year and then maybe Morgan Moses goes and we slide him in.

And I'm, I am still not at all sold that Campbell is a long-term tackle.

I think he might make the move to guard at some point, but we'll see.

But either way, can't be anything other than thrilled with, with what, what Membu did, uh, you know, as far as the backup, backups go.

Uh, look, we didn't get to see any of them play last year really at all outside of Max Mitchell, who was used in those jumbo packages because they were just fully healthy, which again, knock on wood, I mean, the odds that happen two years in a row are super low, but, uh, you know, Max Mitchell's back, Chikuma Korafor is back, those are your kind of, those are your backup tackles, Xavier Newman, they drafted, uh, Annez Cooper as well.

It's hard to really evaluate them too much cause they didn't really play last year.

Chikuma Okor for , you know, at a point, was an NFL caliber right tackle, and then he, his career tanked when he went to the Patriots, and when he quit, yeah, yeah, when he quit, he was playing left tackle , then he quit, and then he didn't play at all, and now he barely played last year, so it's hard to say.

I wouldn't feel super confident with any of those guys playing long term, like , who would you even say is their best backup offense line right now?

Is it Max Mitchell?

I mean, ceiling wise, I think it's in as Cooper.

Sure, sure, but 6th round pick being your best .

I don't think he's totally useless as a pass protector because he, he found a way to not allow a sack despite the limited athleticism.

So his numbers were really good last year, obviously in, in pass protection, but also if your, if your 6th round rookie is your best backup off the lineman, I feel like that's not a good, good.

Keep it simple with 3 1s, we can find a Meyers replacement next year.

I don't even think you need to use a first on the center.

Like you really don't.

That's not a position you usually want to invest the first round pick in.

Like, sure, they have enough draft capital that they can do that, you know, that, that's kind of why it's like a Linderbaum where it's like, oh, obviously this guy is gonna be great, then you can, and by the way, that's why I'm a little, I guess, more optimistic on the parm thing because the interior offensive line market, I think after even if Linderbaum is an outlier, I feel like there are some ripple effects from that that's really gonna cause that to.

Boost up a little bit here.

My biggest take on Chris B has now been a member for 5 months.

Thanks so much for sticking with us, buddy.

Much appreciated, man .

Uh, my biggest take on the Parham thing before we, we welcome in our guests who can give us a little bit more of a, of a scoop on Dylan Parham.

Uh, I just thought the value was fantastic.

Well, it was 2 years.

What was the, the exact number was 20 million.

I don't even know if it was that much or 18 million.

I, I think it was less than, than that, um.

Dylan, I should have just looked up Dylan Parm contract.

It was 2 years, 16 million, up to 2, under a starting left guard, under 8 million in guarantees for a dude who, like, look, John Simpson got 3 years, 30 million.

I think Palm's better than Palm's younger than Simpson, first of all, by 2 or 3 years, and he's better than John Simpson.

He's versatile, right, and you see what some of the other guards.

Are getting, I mean, Robert Hunt two years ago got 20+ million dollars.

Like the guard market has exploded.

The fact that the Jets, and the receiver market are just it's outrageous.

Don't even get me started on the wide receiver market.

I, I know the Christian Watson contract is kind of fake, but even still, just seeing the like $27.5 million.

In fact, it could be $110 million for Fred Warner is making $21 million a year.

Christian Watson is making $27.5 million.

Somebody explained, like, don't get me Christian Watson, isn't even the best receiver on his team that they extended this year.

I think Jaden Reid is better.

He's insane.

He's Watson is making more per year than any safety in the NFL.

Then he's making, dude, average per year, he's making basically the same as Tristan works.

There's just no world where if you're building an NFL roster, you're gonna say that Christian Watson is as valuable as Tristan Morris or even remotely.

I was reading some article about it after all the surgeries.

He's like, yeah, his right leg is like significantly stronger than his left leg.

His left leg is like 4/5 of the strength it once had, and he kind of walks weird.

I'm like, OK, that's worth 27 million.

And even, and you could even say like an Alec Pierce, right, who Alec Pierce, I think sometimes gets a little unnecessary hate.

He's making around like $28 million this year.

Are you saying that Alec Pierce is the same value as Penne Sewell, who's also making $24 million less valuable than Garrett Wilson?

It's fucking insane.

Like it, it, it, it's, it's crazy.

Like there, there's gonna have to be a correction at some point.

I'm sure we'll see it.

That's a whole different rant that I've, I've gone on before.

So let's go bring in our special guest here in the, uh, Jet Press, uh, lecture series.

Uh, he's the site expert over at Just.

Blog baby, it is the one, the only Levi Dombro Levi.

Hey, thanks for joining us.

Yeah, thanks for having me, man.

Good to, good to be, I would be remiss if I did not point out, uh, this entering the fan side of book club that I am reading the Todd Marinovich memoir over here.

Yeah, I just, uh, I just got done reading Amy Trask's book, so it's like one of the next ones on my list.

I gotta, I'm getting through a bunch of Raiders history books this offseason, so.

I had to preempt that before you started talking about how good it feels to get Fernando Mendoza.

I had to go and say, Hey, remember this guy?

This is the wrong podcast for that.

I won't, I won't do that.

I did not know there was a fan-sided book club.

This is news to me.

Well, no, there isn't.

I'm, I'm trying to conjure one here.

I don't know.

I'm, I'm a founding member.

I'm with you, I guess so.

I guess so.

Uh, but welcome in, buddy.

How you doing?

Good, man.

How are you doing?

What's going on in the, in the world of the Raiders right now?

Oh, just, uh, last day of, of mandatory.

Mini camp, uh, I don't think they're practicing tomorrow for the 3rd day.

So, I mean, Kubiak, we'll talk tomorrow and then we're off for the, for the summer.

So we, we got an early start because of the new head coach, as we do every year.

So it's gonna be a, a boring few weeks here, but, you know, it's been good.

A lot of, a lot of interesting stuff coming out.

So we're used to that early start as well.

Didn't happen this year, but I mean, hopefully it doesn't happen next year, but we're, we're, we're used to that as well.

I feel like Jets and Raiders fans kind of have similar experiences watching their team.

Yeah, yeah, we, we've been going through the same.

Thing for, for quite some time.

So yeah, we were 1 and 2 in the draft for a reason, but there you go.

Speaking of, uh, quarterback instability, I think that's a good way to call it.

Uh, Geno Smith is now with the Jets, and obviously they're gambling on Raiders Geno was an apparition, Seahawks Geno is what we're getting, and I, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle where he's definitely better than he was with the Raiders last year, and he's not gonna be what he was when he's making Pro Bowls and taking the Seahawks to the playoffs.

Obviously, not a great situation.

Obviously, he didn't help himself.

Where are you at in terms of where Geno's at on that Seahawks line, Raiders line, in terms of how far in the middle is he?

Is he just cooked or was a lot of that just a byproduct of a horrible situation that I don't know really how you can succeed in that.

Yeah, it's hard because, I mean, the offensive line was just disastrous for most of the year, but I mean, the thing I have to remember is that through the 1st 4 weeks, the O-line was healthy, and still, you know, making some kind of ill-advised decisions there, and, you know, Bowers was banged up during that time, so like you never really got a full, you never got like a good sample size of him with, you know, a healthy O-line and all the weapons healthy.

Uh, so I mean, as, as, you know, as much as Raider Nation kind of just hates Geno and puts most of the onus on him, it's like they're also not blind to the fact that, you know, he was running for his life, and so what I will say about him is that I think he still thinks his arm is as strong as it was a few years ago.

And I think he thinks he can rip some of those balls up the seam, or make some of those tight like back shoulder throws on the boundary that like, he just can't quite make anymore, like that that the ball just doesn't quite have enough zip, and, you know, PFF said, oh, he was the least lucky quarterback, because he had, you know, 5 balls tipped that were, you know, that turned into interceptions, but he also had like 14 turnover worthy plays that didn't get, you know, to uh turn into interceptions, and so.

Um, I don't think he's gonna be as bad for you guys as he was for the Raiders.

I mean , just heard you guys talking about it, the O-line's a lot better.

Um, I mean, you know, they got Brock Bowers, Garrett Wilson, it's like, you know, you sort of have like a, a guy that you can get the ball to, and Breece Hall is obviously, you know, a nice guy to dump it down to.

So I think he's probab, uh, it's hard to say, he's very much in the middle, and I think it'll.

I just don't know.

I, I, I worry about his decision making and sort of his psyche, like you can just sort of tell when he's, when he's gonna make a mistake, you can tell when he's getting frustrated out there, and like, just his body language can be a bad thing for a young team, and so I don't, it's, it's very hard.

It's not like I'm cheering against him, like I really don't hate.

Gino that much, he was very frustrating, he didn't take a lot of accountability, but he got us Fernando Mendoza, so like, you know, maybe it was worth one year, but sort of where I'm, I'm thinking on him.

Yeah, it must be nice, huh?

Hey, gotta take your, uh, gotta, gotta take what you can.

Yeah, those, the decibels of a tiebreaker or whatever it was, yeah.

Keep it simple, says I'd argue that with Reich running 12 and 13 personnel, Gino will get really comfortable in the pocket and surprise some folks.

I, I think when vibes are as bad as they were in Vegas last year, it's very easy for things to snowball and for kind of everything to go to shit, like the, the coaching staff was a disaster, obviously with, with Carol and Uh, Chip Kelly and the offensive line coach Brendan Carroll, right, was the offensive line coach, and yeah, I don't say that name anymore , but yeah, sorry, doofus Pete Carroll's dumb sons running the quarterback room in the offensive line.

That's like the, the Z word around here, Zach.

We try not to talk about that too.

Was it true Chip Kelly was calling plays that weren't in the playbook?

So that's, that's what was reported after the season.

I mean, it was, it was that he won, he was calling plays that weren't installed during the week, it was that he wasn't speaking to the team at halftime, so he would just stay up in the booth and wouldn't go down to the locker room.

He was an NFL head coach, man.

How do you not know?

We saw his, what ended up happening to him as an NFL head coach, and then, and then the other thing was that, uh, he was like not doing a ton of game planning, like he was having like, he was dishing a bunch of stuff off to the assistants, and then when it came time to like install the game plan, he would be trying to put plays in there, and he would try to call plays on Sunday that weren't actually in there.

And so it almost just feels like he got there, realized Pete wanted him to do it one way, and he was just like, screw it, I'll just take my My 15 million or whatever we paid him, 18, like he's like the most expensive offense coordinator in history, so he made out like bandit there, but I wonder why you'd hire Chip Kelly and be like, oh yeah, don't run the Chip Kelly offense, run the Pete Carroll offense, it seems, it seems weird to me.

It doesn't make sense to go out and swing for that big of an OC and then make him, yeah, bow down to the head coach, but, you know.

Nobody accused us of good, uh, of, of good decision making, so.

No, that was, that was as disastrous of a season as there's been in a while for the Raiders, and there were some bad years, like, even the Gruden years were at least competitive at times, like, it was, yeah, it was, it was tough.

One thing, one thing that I was, uh, when I was doing some some looking for, like, Adam Mitchell, right?

You know, this guy that the Jets traded for last year in the Sauce Gardner trade.

We've talked about this already in the pod, Mike, is that I think Mitchell and Geno Smith might be kind of , you know, maybe it's a little hyperbolic to say a match made in football heaven, but I do think that won't come back to bite us in, in weeks.

We've said things on the show that have remember same old Jets is dead.

We, we've, we've, we, no one's ever said same old Jets is dead after beating the Gerard Mayo Patriots.

No one's ever said that on this show anyway, so.

Uh, I do think at least that their skill sets mesh very well with each other.

Of course, Mitchell is very much a, you know, go and get it type receiver, deep ball guy, and Geno Smith throughout his career, especially when he was with the Seahawks, I pulled these numbers, I think last week or two weeks ago, whenever it was.

Uh, I believe PFF had him as the best deep ball passer in the NFL from 2022 to 2024.

Now that was still when he was kind of at his best with the Seahawks, and uh, he had, like, I think it was like 3 straight years where his his PFF passing grade on passes of 20 yards or more was like.

I think, I think all three years were 95 or higher, which is crazy.

Last year, that dipped to like 70.4, I think it is what it was, but that was still his best.

It was still his best PFF passing grade as far as like deep passes, medium passes, short passes, that was his best.

And the stat that I pulled was on throws of 20 + yards last year, he actually had 9 big time throws and only 5 turnoverworthy.

Plays on every other throw combined, 5 big time throws, 14 turnover worthy plays.

So it was, it's funny to note that he had triple the amount of turnover-worthy plays on passes that weren't over 20 yards.

So is that something that you saw last year, at least a little bit, like, you know, maybe the arm strength isn't fully there still, but he still throws a really accurate deep ball.

Is that something that still stood out?

So it's hard to say because he didn't have a lot of turnover worthy plays.

What he had was like, weirdly, and I, and I think I could blame it on him having to get rid of the ball too quickly, was he would feel pressure and he would just chuck it, and like there was plenty of times where Trey Tucker actually had a beat, actually like, you know, beat his guy off the line of scrimmage, no safety help, and he had like a a pass that he could complete downfield , and he overthrew Tucker by like 5 or 10 yards multiple times, and I It's tough to do.

It's tough to do.

Tucker's a fast dude, but like the plays were just like, he was, he was just sitting there in the pocket and knew that it's like, Stone Forsyth was a turnstile at left tackle, and so he couldn't comfortably like just sit in there and then hang for like a deep play, and so I, I do have to say that that was probably part of that going down, and, you know, the turnover worthy plays, yeah, I don't think he had much time to really do anything other than just chuck it up, and most of the time that that led to to overthrows, and so.

Uh, I do know that a few of those big time plays were late in the Commander's game, like I think he had 3 big touchdowns to Trey Tucker, sort of like late in the game, but I, I do think his.

His arm, like he can still chuck it deep, but when he's like targeting the middle of the field there, kind of like we were talking about that 10 to 20 yard range, like he just doesn't get the zip on on the ball to get there, like there were so many passes that just got tipped, that didn't end up in interceptions, and so like I think, I think the deep ball can still be there if he has a little bit more time.

I'll, I'll give him that , like there's nothing wrong with the strength, like throwing it deep, it's just like the, the , I don't know how to say it, getting his arm, getting the ball out quickly maybe, or I don't know what it is, but.

Where is he at mobility-wise?

I always remember like Jets fans are in a unique situation with Gito because we, we're gonna get two very different versions because we're gonna get right when he came in, we saw him and he was terrible.

And then again, but similar situation, I mean throwing David Nelson and guys like that as his top receivers and then he goes as 12 years of development, has some success with Seattle, then he comes back.

When he came out, even though he didn't run a lot in college because it was all West Virginia air raid, like he was a great athlete.

When he came out because like his big selling trait was never that he had like a gun for an arm.

It was always deep accuracy and can make some plays with his legs.

Obviously with older quarterbacks you worry about that, and Jets fans are fresh off Mr. Scramble around, look for plays Aaron Rodgers, and he gets to the Jets and it's 2 seconds checkdown because he didn't have the, especially after the Achilles didn't have the mobility anymore.

Is there still something there like that, or is he just more like wait in the pocket, gripping and ripping?

So he actually does move pretty decently, I'll give him that, like he made some OK plays uh on the on the move.

I don't think that's what they wanted him to do.

It seemed, uh, like he, he took a lot of sacks that he shouldn't have, but I don't think it was for lack of mobility.

I think it was just uh one of the tackles getting ball rushed into him, and, you know, just play breaking down and him.

I don't know if he gave up on plays or it was like making business decisions or whatever people would call it, but like I think.

Maybe he was just like, I'm gonna throw a pick, or I'm gonna fumble if I try to scramble, nobody's open, like the offense was just a complete train wreck.

You, you like watch these breakdowns of like even the run game, and it's like you guys don't even know what's going on, and it's just like a simple, like, you know, inside zone or like a duo, it's like they have no idea what's going on.

And so genie man, jeez, oh my gosh, at one point, I think it was week 12, and he still had more yards after contact than he had yards.

Like that was like a serious thing that I kept tracking throughout the year, and finally, like I think the tide turned at at one point, and he and he got over that threshold, but I mean, I do think Geno's still like his legs still like, he can, he can make some throws on the run, he can get out of the pocket, and more so going to his right, he didn't really, he didn't have that like little spin off going to the left or anything, but.

I, I do think that if you give him a little time, or you do sort of design rollouts, bootlegs, he can have success, but he's not as good at like going off script, at least not with this O-line, especially when the tackles are the issue.

Like, our interior was better, so it's not like he was getting pressure up the middle and then rolling out.

It was like he had to step up and then get out, and it was like it was just kind of a lost cause, so.

Yeah, I'm looking at some more of his splits here, and again, this is like it's, it's June, right?

We gotta, we're gonna try to spin this, we're gonna try to hope our way to, right, even if he's not gonna be Seattle, all you want, like Seattle Geno, all you want is him to not be the Raiders version of Geno that we saw.

Uh, I mean, I mean, again, we're coming off Justin Fields had -10 passing yards in a game, counting sacks, so we're coming off that like him throwing the ball just is an upgrade even if he gets picked, we're like already threw the ball, he didn't take a bad sack.

It sounds like a college stat, yeah, it feels like one of those like, not, I don't say overcorrections, but like Jets fans are just spent through, you know, got through most of the year with Justin Fields just being completely petrified to throw the ball, like literally holding.

The ball forever, not even throwing.

It's the reason Garrett Wilson got hurt last year is because he stared down Wilson for like 8 seconds before he finally threw it to him right as he was about to get hit like that.

That was Justins last year.

So even this has nothing to do with my stat, by the way, but just on that point, like, even if Geno Smith is, is turning the ball over a little bit, like, which he's got, it's even always has just make your peace with that, right?

I, I think Jets fans will be.

Able to live with that as long as there's some flashes in there as well, as long as he's still making, you know, throws that just Justin Fields wasn't even attempting, let alone complete.

Listen to the bar we're setting.

Like throw the ball.

The bar is Jets fans want their quarterback to throw the ball.

That's, that's the bar, right?

And we didn't get that for a whole year.

Yeah, Geno's not gonna be afraid to throw that.

We know that.

No, he's not.

He'll, he'll put it in harm's way.

It's a, it's a two-sided coin.

His confidence is.

Yeah, he'll, he thinks he can make throws he can't make, but he'll also make some completions where like the DB is like, why did you even throw that this direction?

I didn't think you were even, I'll give him this though, he's, he's a great OTA guy because for all his faults, man, he does he throw a spiral that in OTA videos, yeah, that's whizzing there, man.

Uh, yeah, you get irrational in the offseason, you're like, all right, he's got it.

We've seen enough good stuff from him, that's what he's gonna bring to us, yeah, so.

And they're not unfamiliar with and look, look at what's happening with Kate Klubnickleting checkdowns.

It's all we got is this the guy?

Yes, you never know.

The Geno Hoium stat that I'm pulling here is if you're looking at his PFF pressure stats, right, pressure grades.

So when he was kept clean last year, he had an 83.0 PFF grade when he was under the pressure, 29.3%.

So you can look at that two ways.

You could say.

Absolutely disastrous when he's pressured, like, you would obviously always expect like a quarterback to perform better when they're kept clean, like that's just, it's gonna be true across the board for every quarterback.

That discrepancy is crazy, like 83 down to a 29.3 is is nuts.

His, his, uh, completion percentage, where I just saw it .

His completion percentage when under pressure was 49%.

When he was kept clean, it was 75.6%.

That is an unbelievable discrepancy.

Yeah.

Uh, obviously, you're just hoping that.

You know, obviously, I don't know, maybe some of that while under pressure, like cause I'm looking at his other, uh, you know, if you look at his Seattle numbers, right, when he's under pressure, even his last year in Seattle, 64.0 PFF grade when under pressure.

Like that's the worst.

It was 91.7 when he was kept clean, but it's at least manageable and all the Seattle is manageable.

Last year when he was under pressure, like genuinely unplayable, couldn't do anything.

5.

Yeah, it was bad.

15 turnover worthy plays, 6.5% turnover worthy play rate.

Like, and the funny part is I wonder what the, what's the sample size difference, like what percentage of snaps was he pressured on?

So 85%, I don't know.

Yeah, so he's actually kept clean 59.5% of the time, 40, that's shocking, 40.5% under pressure.

If you're comparing that to Seattle, he was under pressure less in those years, but not significantly less.

That's interesting to me.

And I, you know, he also, he also went from DK Metcalf and JSN and Tyler Lockett to Jack Bash injured Brock Bowers and Don Powers and Tucker.

I mean, he had Jacoby Myers for the 1st 6 weeks of the year too.

On Myers got traded and there was no Bowers, he's throwing it.

It's like how do you, how do you make an offense out of this?

No disrespect, Michael Dante Thornton, but you know.

On Dylan Parham really quick because you said the interior was better and obviously Parham is part of that.

Now, the thing that I kept that I really didn't get, and again, this is a neutral observer and I can't imagine what a Raiders fan was doing is pulling their hair out is why the Carroll's moved all the interior guys around like Jackson Powers Johnson from center to right guard, I think, and I know Parham had played.

Both the points in his career, but they were moving him around .

What, what was the logic behind those moves?

Cause the Jets did it with Joe Tipman and it worked out, but nothing worked out when the Raiders were moving all those guys around.

And then number 2, why in, or why or how in such a bad year for the Raiders' offensive line did Paar manage to at least look, for lack of a better word, OK.

So there really was no rationale given other than Chip Kelly basically said during training camp, Jordan Meredith's kind of built like Jason Kelsey, so we're gonna try him at center.

And so that was, I, I don't know, Brendan Carroll, I don't know how much of it was Brendan Carroll, I don't know how much of it was Chip Kelly.

I think if you believe ESPN did this sort of crazy story at the end of the year where they said, like, Brendan Carroll was so bad that the O-line was watching film together, like without him.

And, and the and our GM John Spyk had to go watch film one on one with players to like make sure they were like learning stuff.

First year GM having to do that.

That that sounds like that sounds like a spiritually Jets story.

I was that sounds spiritually like Nathaniel Hackett, like that's what that sound was wait, did Carl , he was not picked up by anybody, right?

He's not coaching this year.

What do you think after that year.

Somebody's hired him.

Nathaniel Hackett was courted by two different teams this year.

Like, it doesn't matter.

OC jobs.

I know he's an OC in Arizona.

He was hired as QB coach by the Dolphins, and the Cardinals were like, No, no, no, no, no.

We, oh no, au contraire, we got.

We're gonna make you offensive coordinator.

Not, we're not gonna do that.

Mike LaFleur is gonna do that.

The guy that you replaced.

Yeah, uh, so who knows, yeah, yeah, the NFL 100% has no boundaries, but anyway, no, yeah, it was, it was just all bad, and so, um, I mean, the JPJ, I think the, the thinking was sort of like.

His injury history was uh a little bit concerning, and maybe they wanted that center to be the connector, and they wanted it to be a guy that they could rely on more, so, and it seems like this regime sort of made a big investment in Linderbaum, so I don't think that's necessarily like a bad move, but what I didn't like what they did with Parham was that he had the best season of his career in 2024 at right guard, and then they moved him back to left guard.

And so, I mean, he snapped a little bit in college, like he can play all three spots on the interior, but I thought he was best at right guard and Um, he is just like the epitome of like a serviceable guard, like, sort of like you guys were talking about, he's not gonna stand out, he's not gonna get flagged, like he, he got, I think, like you said, like maybe like 18 penalties in 4 years, I was looking at it, like very low number, and that's on like 4, almost 4000 snaps, like he missed.

2 games in each of the last 2 years, so he played in like all but 4 games in 4 years.

He's like so much experience, he's not gonna make these like glaring mistakes, but he's also not gonna like blow somebody up, and then like get to the 2nd level and take out a linebacker, like he's just sort of like your solid run of the mill guard, um, with, so if if you guys are gonna have him at left guard.

Next to Faschenu, so it's interesting because the best year of his career, he was at right guard next to Thayer Munford, and DJ Glaze as a rookie, and he didn't play as well next to Colton Miller, and so maybe there's some weird thing where like he feels like he needs to do more if he's next to a tackle that's not as good, and so, you know, you got uh got him opposite of Membu, but.

Um, his, his, like the Raiders' best year with him was his rookie year, and Jacobs, this was under Josh McDaniels, Jacobs led the league in rushing, um, with him at left guard, and it sort of felt like he was going to be like a future piece there, and they were running more of like a power scheme then like more of a like a gap scheme, and it just sort of like year by year we started getting like more and more into like, you know, sort of zone concepts, and, you know, he's never been like an exceptional pass blocker, but he's.

He's good enough in zone and gap schemes that like he's very serviceable in the run game, you probably need to slide the center over to help him in, in, you know, pass protection, but he's like just very serviceable solid.

If he's your weakest link, I think you guys will be fine up front.

Well, now part of me is like, well, now we can move him to right guard and put Titman at left guard, and then part of me is like Dylan Parm's like, I'm sick of this moving around.

Yeah, stick me in a place, I don't care.

Both Titman and Parm are getting moved around.

It is always good.

Though, to have that extra versatility because you even have Josh Myers at center who he can play both guard spots as well.

So all three of your interior offensive linemen, I think that's something that NFL teams are valuing a lot more these days, especially in, you know, with all these injuries.

I know the Jets didn't have to deal with that last year, but it is very valuable.

We saw this with Elijah Bear Tucker.

It is very valuable to have, especially interior offensive linemen that could kind of play all three of those spots because, you know, if, say Parham goes down, say Myers goes down, right, this has been a question with Jets fans.

It's like, who are you playing at center, right?

They don't have a.

Backup center on their roster like they, they, Xavier Newman could do it in theory, but I think it'd be more likely, Mike, that they probably move either Titman or Parham there and then stick Newman or I think it depends on either one guy has to be playing either amazing or terrible.

Like if Parham or Titman are playing so great that you can't move him out of left guard or right guard, then I think you move the other one.

Or if one of, if Parham just stinks and isn't playing good at left guard, then I think they kick him in and then try somebody else at left guard.

I think it really is like a play it by ear situation, but they have the ability to do that, which they do in past years, the, uh, Keith Carter years, uh, they did not, they literally, not, not exaggerating, were, were pulling guys off the street to play Chris Blazer, Jake Hanson, guard in NFL.

Chris Blazer is always the guy I remember.

Like there were dudes they were literally pulling off the street and starting, and then they played two games.

Cut him.

Like it was the, the amount of turnover was crazy.

They were tryouts to play guard during games.

Like it was like, all right, who, who are we trying this week?

Just like putting out flyers on the street, yeah.

And then the funny part was they draft Carter Warren.

He was the pick after Titman, I think, a 4th round pick, and he never played ever.

So we don't even wanna try him.

Yeah, he was, he was.

Parham, Parham's interesting cause, you know, looking more into him, he, when he first got to college, he was a tight end, and he's, it's funny if you look at PFF, they still listed him at, at, I guess what his weight was .

I, I don't even think it was when he was coming to the NFL because he must have been bigger than this, but he's listed at 285, which obviously he's a lot larger than that now.

I think he's up to like 330 something.

OK, that's somehow it's not even close, like, is there, is there a chance you're accidentally looking at Donald Parham?

No, no, Dylan Harham, no, that, that, that would be so funny.

PFF lists him at 63285, and I, I believe he's around 6'3 , 330 now.

Yeah, he's, I just, I don't, I, I don't think they changed that, uh, and I, I'm sure he must have measured and like he must have weighed more at the combine.

Like he's no way he was 285 at the combine and you're, yeah, no, he was a, he was a third rounder.

He wouldn't have gotten taken that early as an interior player first pick that year because they had, he was the, he was the first pick of the McDaniels Ziegler era because we traded our 1 and 2 to, to Green Bay.

Green Bay took Quay Walker, who's now a Raider, which is funny, but, um, yeah, so that was the first, and Devonte Adams had a long Raiders career that is exactly to this day, illustrious.

Yeah, we got a ton done with him.

Super good you get with the pick that the Jets gave for Devonte Adams.

Geno Smith.

Oh yeah, cause they flipped the, we traded it to, yeah, so we were sitting there and we were like, we traded Devonte for Geno Smith, that's fine.

And then I think they took what Milro with that, so it all, yeah, everything always comes back to adjustment.

I don't, I don't know what, what the hell happened there on, on the weight thing, is that something that was like a topic of discussion for Parham early in his career was like trying to get in the bulk Cup.

I know he wasn't 285.

No, I don't, I don't really recall him.

I wasn't covering the team then, but I don't, uh , like I was, yeah, this is, I, I've been a Raiders fan my whole life, but like really doing the in-depth analysis has just in the last like two years or so.

But what I remember like learning about him was that I think he was like an athlete that was versatile and that they, we sort of, yeah, we needed somebody to plug and play as like our fifth O-lineman.

And we were trying to figure out, uh, you know, the Patriot way, how are we gonna, you know, uh, put, you know, pigeonhole everybody in and make them, you know, obey Josh McDaniels, and, you know, they stuck him in at left guard, and the team ran well that year, and so they just kind of kept him there.

And then, yeah, it wasn't until for whatever reason, Luke Getzy figured out that he was better at right guard, and then Pete Carroll was like, no, he's actually better at left guard.

But he wasn't, but, um, but yeah, I don't, I don't recall that ever being an issue.

I don't think he's, you know, I would, whatever you're saying weight wise, 3:30 sounds about right, like he's definitely, he's not like, you know, an ultra athlete, like I was saying, but uh, but he's, you know, he's just like solid of everything, he's just like a jack of all trades, master of none kind of guy, like he doesn't have these traits that stick out as like good or bad, which I don't think is the worst thing ever for.

Like a guard, so right at the, I love the Carroll era because it's the, the combination of being like confident and wrong and being as wrong as they were like, oh, he's definitely better at right guard and then he's terrible.

Like it was Jordan Merret is great and then he's the worst center in the league.

I love when that happens where they're just digging their heels in.

They just dug their heels in and like Pete Carroll would not admit he was wrong in a postgame presser and Gino wouldn't admit he was wrong either, and it just like, and like reporters couldn't even ask him questions without like it being contentious.

It was just a complete mess.

Somebody's wrong, they're winning 3 games, like somebody own up to this.

No, it's just luck you're just getting really unlucky, man.

It's just, it's yeah, no, hey, that's what Gino said.

That was the, that's the last thing I'll say about Gino is that it might, if he has a bad game or two, he's gonna drive you nuts in in postgame pressers because he'd like.

Blamed A Dante Thornton for one of them, uh, last year.

He's like, I remember the red line with Mike Williams.

I wonder how much of that too also just stems from the organizational attitude, like from coming from the coaching staff.

Well, Pete Carroll, right, Pete Carroll didn't hold him accountable, so he didn't feel accountable to anything, and like, you know, he was sort of getting some heat from like the fan base.

There's a picture, you know , obviously of him flipping off the fans and like Raiders fans were very hard on him because he, you know, like after week.

2 or 3, he was pretty like, he was like, you know, I'll put it on me, whatever, that's my fault, and then as soon as it started to get really bad and the wheels were falling off, he was like, screw you guys too, and he should have come back on the ball more, and I'm just getting unlucky and like, you know, he was like, I'm not gonna be here much longer.

I don't think Pete is either, so screw these guys.

As a Jets fan, I think he was totally right and did not, yeah, he was, well, listen, listen, I. I have had my run-ins with the Raiders fan base.

I, I did cover the Raiders for a little bit, and, uh.

I, I, I've said it on air.

I've said this before, Levi.

I don't mean this as a shot at you.

The Raiders fan base is probably my least favorite fan base in all sports that I've ever had to deal with.

OK. And look, they're a vocal bunch.

I'll say that .

Yeah, it's not everybody.

It's, it's always, you know, there's a select few that kind of ruin it for everyone else, but they will, they're not gonna be.

They're the Knicks fans who were beating people up, and, although how many of those are actual Knicks fans?

Let's be real.

Some of those are, yeah, there's a lot of them, Justin.

Some of them are you ask, ask them if they watched Andrea Bargnani play basketball for the Knicks, and I bet, I bet 95% of them did not, did not, uh, but anyway, I digress.

Uh, yeah, I, I, Raiders fans are not gonna be shy about voicing their displeasure, especially if things are going south and they don't think players are playing up to standard or holding their, you know, play, you know, taking accountability.

So I imagine some of that probably got to Geno and The whole organization sucking was just, you know, like, we've seen it with the Jets, like when things go south, everybody is grumpy, everybody's mad, everybody's pissed, nobody's taking accountability, like it's a.

He's the thing, here's the thing about Raider Nation is like we've seen this team be so bad for 25 years that I think most of us, and it's like funny to see the discourse on like Raiders Twitter and stuff because.

Like so many of the people that Raiders fans think should be doing this or should be doing that, like, we end up being right, and it's funny, like everybody was like, you know, do not take, uh, don't take Tyree Wilson and Raiders fans were like, don't take, you know, Gary Conley and like all these people that like Raiders fans.

Don't take Cleveland Ferrell, right, right, I, I don't think that was a Raiders specific thing.

I think everybody knew that that was like, everybody, no, please, what are you doing?

Alex Leatherwood round one, right?

Leatherwood, right, it's so it's like it's Raiders fans have seen.

so much incompetence over the years, and they are sort of like convinced that they could be better GMs and I think for the last two decades, they're right.

I think Spytech finally has it figured out, but, you know, I gotta give Raiders fans credit.

We've, we've hit on a lot of stuff over the years.

We wanted Christian Gonzalez, not Tyree Wilson.

We were right about that one.

And so, you know, yeah, Raiders fans are passionate, love them to death, but, uh, yeah, they, uh, any rival fan base, yeah, you can, you can definitely, you know, pick out the bad ones and, you know, paint it.

Paint a picture.

I, I know you've obviously, you know, covered the team and stuff like that , but, you know, I gotta, gotta send, send love to Raider Nation here.

So Jets fans are the opposite, where like, not only do we get, like, we'll say sign Mike Williams, the team will literally listen, sign Mike Williams, and terrible.

Like Woody Woody Johnson, like there's literal actual reports about Woody Johnson listening to social media pressure to sign Mike Williams and Tyrone Smith, and then you could find tweets, you could find tweets from the Jet press.

Saying, oh man, I really wish the Jets signed Mike Williams and Tyrone Smith, and then they signed them both, and they had, and Tony Adams was a terrible safety.

Literally, there's a, there's a site called Jet Jet Jet X Factor, you know, it does what Jeff Press does, the nice guys over there.

It'd be great, but, uh, they wrote an article saying Tony Adams could be benched, and basically Woody Johnson read that and went to Robert Salah and went, hey, Tony Adams should be benched, and then he did it with like the most random, like obscure player.

Even in that moment it didn't even make like of all the issues with the team we're gonna it'd be like last year if they're like, you know, we're, we're really gonna take accountability and we're really not gonna play Zamir White.

Like that's literally what happened.

Like, see, see, Raiders fans wish they had that much power.

If we had that much power, the team would be in a better place.

We have it and we regret it because dangerous.

Look what happened don't want it.

Trust me, you don't want that power.

It's a, yeah, double, double-edged sword.

We willed Rodgers into existence, right?

Yeah, what happened there.

Yeah, we will Devonte Adams into existence for you guys.

People wanted him gone.

They're like, send him to the Jets.

At least he was good.

Rodgers was, it is funny that that when the Jets finally got Adams, it was like, oh, OK, great, but they were also like 3 and 6 or whatever 3 and 6, and Salah gotten fired by that point.

It was like.

Yeah, it was like move.

Yeah, they finally did it.

Is this really the time to do it though?

Like it felt inevitable for so long and then it didn't happen, didn't happen, didn't happen.

And then when it finally happened, it was like, oh, it's, it's already too late.

Like the, the ship, the ship has sailed.

Yeah, it's very interesting the way that all went down, but that's how it goes, man.

We're, we're spirit.

Jets fans and Raiders fans, we're kindred spirits.

We, we get, we are, we are, yeah, we got to, uh.

It's how I feel about the uh the Sacramento Kings as a as a. I, I fully understand them because when I covered the Raiders, I was covering Bay Area sports, and they included Sacramento in that, so I was covering the Kings and I, I don't know if there's a more tortured fan, and I say this as a Jets fan.

I don't know if there's a more tortured fan base in sports than Sacramento Kings fans.

I truly think they might beat Jets fans in that category, and it is continuing to this day.

Like I Nets, Nets are up in one.

I don't think they're up there.

No, if they see remember when they were gonna win a championship, and then the mayor put in a law that affected one player you have that the King's peak of the last 20 years.

It was one year where they made the playoffs and lost in the first round to their arch rivals.

they didn't have any expectations.

And then guess what happens, Mike?

They fire Mike Brown, who led the Knicks to the NBA Finals.

They trade De'Aaron Fox for Zach Levine's contract.

The Aaron Fox helps lead the Spurs to the NBA Finals.

They traded away, uh, uh, Tyrese Halliburton, who leads the Pacers to the NBA Finals, a despicable organization.

Disgrace Harrison Barnes is playing minutes for the Sacramento for the, for the San Antonio Spurs.

Now that's not the King's fault, but still getting back on Raiders Jets.

Thanks for, uh, thanks for coming in, Levi Dunbar.

A lot of good intel on Geno Smith, a lot of good intel on Dylan Parham, and, uh, kind of what the hell went wrong generally last year with the Raiders because I'm sure a lot of Raiders fans were looking at the Jets going, Man, what the hell is happening there?

And we were saying the same thing.

With the Raiders, but you, you want us in the tank, you beat us out in the tank bowl, and you got your Fernando Mendoza.

I know he may not start right away, but I, I guarantee his first start's gonna be against the Jets in week 7, and he wins it.

Is he really?

Are they like confirming he's not starting week one?

They haven't confirmed anything.

I mean, Kubiak's like, don't count out Aidan O'Connell, but like that's a real.

I'm counting him out right about I'm gonna count him out.

Counting O'Connell out, but I'm not counting out that they might want to trade him.

Um, but yeah, so I, uh, I think he could be starting by then.

It's hard because that's like a good stretch, like week 6 and 7, we're at home, week 8, we go to the Jets, week 9, we have a quick road trip against the Against the uh the Niners, uh, he could be starting by then.

It really depends on how the O-line and the run game is doing, how much can we sort of support Mendoza, but and and going from, I'm gonna be, look, we have Omar Cooper, so like we don't wanna hand Indiana too much, but kind of like a kind of a rinky dink weird college RPLE offense going from that to Clint Kuby.

A mentally is a little, a little difficult.

If there's a guy that can do it though, I think it's him.

I mean, he's making a lot of strides.

He was working with Brian Greasy this offseason, like working on West Coast stuff, and so, I mean, yeah, this is a, this is a Rome wasn't built in a day kind of thing.

And for once we have like an actual, let's not just throw the guy in there, let's play a veteran, let's like, you know, so I'm patience is the, is the key here.

Can't, can't like, you know, rush it, so.

Well, we, well, we have David Bailey, so take that.

Exactly.

You guys are like the Jets roster building strategy, except they didn't have a quarterback to take this year, and they, David Bailey too.

So you guys got a, got a few bites at the apple next year and do, right?

So 2020, not Brendan Soresby though.

He's out because riverboat gambler, him, yeah, he's out.

No, he's in for 2027.

He's out of the, uh, him in this market.

Oh my God.

Oh yeah, he would get eaten alive.

It would be brutal.

There's no way to, you know, bet legally in, in New York and New Jersey.

People don't do that, you know, like, yeah, there's, there's no organizations that could help that we facilitate.

Atlantic City is not like a drive away.

No, no, yeah, keep him away from Rick Pitino.

Yeah, I love that guy to death, but he needs to not be the state or region of the country.

But, it's a good call.

Well, I much appreciate it, buddy.

Glad we're able to have.

You on, we wanted to have you on for the draft show a couple of months ago.

That didn't work, obviously.

The Raiders.

It was a busy day.

It was a busy day, busy day, yeah, man.

I appreciate you, uh, giving me a second chance here to get on.

I appreciate you guys, uh, inviting me.

The Jets have given Geno Smith a second chance.

We are giving organization.

We're paying it forward.

That's what we have to do, right?

Exactly, yeah.

Hope , hope for you guys, Geno's not as, uh, as bad as he was for us, but if he's gonna be bad, then be as bad.

He was for us and go get your guy next year.

So that's, that's a, that's a mindset, buddy.

You can check out Levi's work, just blog baby anywhere else on Twitter at Levi Dombro.

Nathan.

That's, uh, that's about it, yeah.

Just blog baby on social media, just blogbaby.com and yeah, personal is uh Levi Dombro as it's, as it's spelled there.

So yeah , I appreciate you guys.

All right, much appreciated, Levi.

All right, thank you guys.

All right, he took it easy on Gino.

I, I feel like take it easy on Gino.

He could have been a little bit more, uh, you know, more, more, well, cause we, me and him have gone back and forth in work channels because he like hates Derek Carr.

Oh, well, I'm a Derek Carter fans.

Raiders fans despise.

Well, that's it, and I like, I get the point of having him for so long and constantly buttoned up against the ceiling, but honestly, I think that's what made me hate Raiders fans in the first place was see like dude, the amount of Photoshopped Derek Carr on like.

The worst humans in history.

Yeah, like, all right, like, all right, did he leave some meat on the bone?

Yeah, but also like, pretty good, Derek Carr.

Like it was, it was crazy.

Derek Carr is what, the 2nd best quarterback in Jets history, if he has that career?

Probably, yeah, if he would have one of the best, he had multiple seasons that would be like.

The best season in Jets and I think obviously longevity, like I'm not saying he's better than Kenny Stabler, but I think he has all the Raiders passing records that car, probably pass Stabler.

Plunkett's up there, I guess, maybe I don't know.

Plunkett mid two Super Bowls.

Plunkett was not particularly good.

That, that was just like he kind of, I don't wanna say a Dan level, but he kind of Donaldd his way to two rings with those, those teams were stacked, those early 80s Raiders, yeah.

Well, you got any final thoughts before we, uh , before we sign off, Mike?

Hope we get Seattle, Gino, because if we get Raiders, Gino.

My, my Aaron Glenn praise is going to, uh, well, I, I, there's, you're not gonna have to worry about it.

Aaron's gonna be gone if we get age poorly because, yeah, yeah, it's just gonna be because if he fails, it's gonna be like another Jets season where it's gonna feel like 2023 again.

Where it's like, oh, we got everything in place, if only we had the quarterback, and then we just, I don't think it'll feel quite like 2023 because there were Super Bowl expectations.

I mean spiritually, roster construction wise, it'll be like, you know what it'll be, it'll be like 20, well, a little, little less expectations in 2016, but similar to that where it's like you're hoping to get, you know, the Fitzpatrick year where it's like, all right, 2015 was awesome, like, obviously different situation as, you know, but.

Fitz ends up completely shit in the bag through what, 6 interceptions in week 3?

Yeah, something, those with the Chiefs game, is that what the yeah, Chiefs game, and then Geno came in and was good, and then he got hurt the next game, we're like, oh, come on.

Yeah.

I don't know.

Oh boy, was that, was that a Matt Sims year?

said congratulations to Jermaine Johnson , who was definitely the winner of the South Carolina Democratic gubernatorial, uh, primary .

I hate that word gubernatorial.

Yeah, it's, it's like it's, it sounds weird.

It should be gubernatorial cause it's governor.

Yeah, I don't know why the B, why is there a B?

There's gotta be some linguist out there that can tell us why that is.

Fix your word.

English language didn't at Merriam-Webster fix your word.

Sure, we're gonna get Merriam-Webster on the pod.

What if that happened?

I was wondering like if you just like bully the dictionary again, they'd be like, All right, this works for this now.

Like if you just, I don't, I don't think that's, I don't think you could bully the dictionary.

I don't like if there was enough of a movement, there were like 1,000,000 people being like, make this word mean this, but they just give in to peer pressure.

Language is just what you make it.

The, the Merriam-Webster has no power unless we give them power, Mike.

So if we take all the words, they have all the words.

If we enact our people power and take it back from the dictionary, then they don't own any power.

We can make anything mean anything.

Language is what you make it.

Language is your oyster, Mike.

By the way, did you see, um, one last thing on Soarsby, apparently the, uh, The Texas Tech AD put out a statement.

Oh yeah, it was, it was like a shame on you guys or whatever he's playing.

Yeah, shame on you.

It was, it was very much like a uh.

Very much one of those like I'm not reading that.

I'm happy that I'm happy for you, we're sorry that happened.

I read all that sorry that happened or you know like size 7 aerial font.

I'm like, OK, you, you're jumping through way too many hoops.

He's, he's going nuts about it.

Anyway, my final thoughts are, yeah, hopefully we get, uh , more so Seahawks, Gino.

Hopefully the Knicks win tonight, so I, yeah, I could feel, uh, you know, feel something again and, and stop feeling so anxious about, OK, you're up 2-1 in the finals.

Don't be like, so I can feel something, no man, no, man.

If they, if they, if they tie this shit up, I think the Spurs are winning.

I think if the Spurs win tonight, I think they're winning the all season.

I don't think they are either.

I think they're winning all series.

I hope they don't.

I hope they don't tie it up tonight, but, uh.

We'll see, and hopefully it's a fair whistle, you know, hopefully maybe they call one or two flagrants on, on admittedly, because I'm not normally, we're consistent on this podcast outside of that one Chiefs Jets primetime game where they got absolutely hosed.

We are not a ref screwed us team.

Neither There was one play where I think Mike Brown was like it was going around on Twitter where Mike Brown was like, how come you didn't call it that on Jalen Brunson's drive?

And the ref was like, Oh yeah, you're right.

Yeah, oh shit, you're right.

Oh shit, you're right.

There were two plays in that game that, that should have been flagrants on Wendy , obviously the one where he's just mauling Bronson, that should have been a flagrant.

They didn't even call.

A common foul and they didn't even call it a flagrant, correct, because if he gets two more flagrants, he gets suspended.

Later in the game, he closed out recklessly on a Josh Hart 3.

Hart didn't flop, so they didn't even call it a common foul.

It was a significantly worse closeout than the one that they called a flagrant on Brunson for on the Champagne one.

Both of those should have been flagrants.

Neither were even called a common foul.

It's It's just wild, man.

Take it up with Brendan Sosby's judge, and he'll agree with you then, I guess so.

It's just crazy, man.

He's, he's very, uh, he's very favorable to defendants.

Yeah, but he's from Texas, so he'll probably side with San Antonio.

He'll probably side with Wendy regardless, because there's gambling involved.

Simple said if the refs do their job right, Knicks win.

Let's hope so, buddy.

Let's hope so.

I appreciate it.

Uh, but anyway.
